Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

These last few days have been beautiful. Yesterday it was stupid windy, but today it's nice. Preparing for the 2-3" of rain they say we're getting tomorrow and thursday. It's awfully dry here so hope they get it right. I worked up my garden today with some lovely chicken poo that I've been saving for a while-- would be nice to have some rain to work it down into the ground. The forecasters here have been wrong an awful lot lately so I don't know. So i noticed that one of my girls lays on the ground during the day instead of the roost. I thought maybe it was to stay out of the wind, but saw her doing it today too. Is this normal?? I just always thought they preferred to be off the ground. She's fine otherwise. Also, does anyone worry about their birds eating earthworms?? I saw that a post that said they cause gape worm. Last night my girls had a ball finding a few worms. Don't really know how you'd keep them from eating them anyway but just wondered.

Hi Kdwag... I have seen some of my girls lay down. Sort of stretched out on their side... sort of. It looked really strange but they got up with no problem or issue. I have seen them do that outside in the sun and under the heat lamp. I guess it could be a way to bask in the warmth and soak up the heat. I guess... I never looked it up sense the girls seem fine. Anyone else see or hear of this?
Oh and today I finally found the Vinegar with Mothering in it. It was not in normal stores out here. I will look all the ways to use it and try them out. I am really interested in the fermented feed... but I remember it is good to give it in their water as well.
Good Luck integrating the new birds MB... Glad you both caught Duke. I wish you all the best.

Chickens love to lay down on the ground when its dry and/or warm outside. Kdwag you probably caught your girl in the middle of her dust bath. My girls have made craters in their run during their dust baths.

Yay! It's hatch day again!

My daughter has been begging for silkies for years now. I finally broke down and ordered some eggs. I set 6 eggs with this hatch, but by lockdown day, only one egg was still thriving. So I told her not to get her hopes up too high over one egg. But of course, she's 8, so that's not possible. She even named the silkie egg before it hatched...Mr. O'Hurn, after the student teacher in her class, who has a bushy beard like a silkie chicken. My daughter has a massive crush on her teacher. It's kind of adorable.

Anyway, when I left for work this morning, the bator was quiet, but when I came home for lunch, there's Mr. O'Hurn, running around the bator! Sophia will be so excited!

Now if those Crested Cream Legbar eggs would hatch, this would be a perfect chicken day.

Hope finally laid her first egg! Today is already a 3 out of 5 day & one is mounting so we may or may not get one from her. She has laid a few since starting to mount though. Maybe we will actually start getting 5 out of 5 soon???

So a few weeks or so ago someone on here said they were going to try the whole baking the eggs thing. Did that work? Hubby was really in the mood for hard boiled eggs so I saved some from Feb and the beginning of March and they still didn't turn out so well.
