Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Well today it was only 82 here but humid and my RIR was panting like crazy. What in the world will she be like when it's 90? They had plenty of shade, and I misted their run and gave them a cold apple and cold water but I worry what she'll be like if I'm not home all the time to constantly tend to her. :(
Will see what tomorrow brings, calling for upper 80s with increased humidty. She seems to be the only "hot" one in the group.

I am so bummed. As of right now I am missing 6 chicks. We had some dogs show up on the property and they scattered into the trees. I am holding out hope that at least most of them are still alive, but until they come home I wont know for sure. We free range so we know this is a risk, but these are my first losses so I am taking it harder than I thought I would. Boo to people who don't keep their animals contained on their own property!

Ariekannairb hoping the rest of your girls come home. It really is emotional when you lose one. I couldn't imagine losing 6 at once. If that one came home I am sure others will too. :(

My RIR does the same thing - they are definitely not as heat tolerant as my other breeds. You can try freezing 2-liter bottles or milk jugs and laying them around the run - maybe she will lay next to them. Another cool thing I learned on here was this...

Well, so far no more have come home. I am actually thinking it was hawks. As soon as I let them out today, there were several circling the area. For now they will have to stay cooped when we aren't home.

Are any fellow Texans getting insane weather this week? We've had all these tornado warnings on and off, high wind and thunderstorms. It's pretty funny watching the chickens try and walk across the yard in the strong wind. They could of course hide out in their coop but they are intent on digging up my marigolds and no tornado is going to get in the way of THAT.

I am for sure going to try frozen bottles in my run. It seems to work well for a lot of people. Kdwag, you are not alone! I'm super worried about the heat as well.

Ariekannairb, I am very sorry to hear about that. I hope more of them turn up.

I do have to share that now both of my EE's are laying daily! I guess she got that shell-less egg out of her system and now, success! We had some for breakfast the other day, so tasty! The girls have been doing a good job!
