Any other hobby entomologists here?

These are photos I've taken last couple years. I was searching for my Bald-Faced Hornet photos but haven't found them yet.

Praying mantis nymphs (and going by size a Chinese or European one)

Our periodical cicada emergence like 2020? The spiders had a feast. We had thousands on our property that year

Milkweed beetle ... I must admit I am a little harsh on these guys bc I grow the milkweed for monarchs lol

Spider, never looked up a name

Butterfly (I'll look up his name some sort of checkered)
20220815_190010.jpg

Monarch that I actually raise last year (been raising them for years but this year may not be able to as my milkweed bloomed too early even with me cutting it back)

Swallowtail

Dog day cicada-- although we've learned there are several kinds of cicadas (dog day, swamp, and many more)

I think your mystery butterfly is a Pearl Crescent, but it could be a Silvery Checkerspot. I think Pearl because of the more "lacey" inner wing pattern but not an expert...

We have bad yellow jackets here, in fact one town south of here is named Twisp which means yellow jacket. We bought some fly stripsticks to hang buy our door. They work great for flies, but also catching yellow jackets like crazy.

Yellowjackets are highly beneficial insects, so keep killing to a minimum as much as you can. A lot of yellowjackets means there's an abundance of crop killers and other pests like grubs, caterpillars, and flies ;)

Our Bald-Faced Hornet nest. By the time we found it on ground this is what was left. We do have some of it's paper wrapping in our nature cabinet.

Dont even worry about that, I LOVE chatting about bugs :D Seriously, post here as much as you want! Chances are even if I dont reply I saw and loved whatever you've shared (this applies to everyone here) 🧡

Thanks.

I didn't get a good photo of it but the other day my son and I witnessed a rare bug, Mydas Fly, it was so cool. Sort of looked like a dragonfly/butterfly flying but was larger than my thumb but sort of flew like a beetle would.

Yay other weird people who think bugs are awesome! I started a bug collection back in junior high for 4-H, now I have a junior high 4-Her taking entomology (was that really that long ago?!). I even got to take entomology in college (best class ever!). I love helping the kid with his big collection but he also decided to take rocks this year, I don’t have a clue about rocks! Thankfully the google app has a ‘take a picture and name that thing’ feature! Of course it decided one of his rocks was either an epic homemade bread fail or dried deer placenta. I told him he’d be fine at the fair as long as the judge hadn’t taken geology in undergrad…yeah he had! Though the judge was keen on rocks he didn’t have a clue on bugs (small fair, judges get a lot of random and unrelated projects, this guy also got vegetables and quail eggs!). It’s always fun to see what others find fascinating (or gross)!
