Y'all have all been so accepting of me posting pictures and stories of my sweet pet rat Earl. I'm just curious if there are any other rat owners on here? I've been a member here for so long while I was raising chickens and I just enjoy posting here rather than rat forums, so....

I used to own pet rats, I loved them SO much!! They're so soft, friendly, and they potty train themselves (unlike chickens who will poop willy nilly). However I was always heartbroken because they have such short life spans I stopped having them. Every now and then I miss having then because I will have a dream of cuddling my rats on my shoulder. After my last ones died I would wake up in a panic because I'd think I haven't fed them in months! But it would just be that they've been dead for months... I wake up and get sad.

I had one rat when I was a teen. I named her Socrates mostly because I didnt find out until later he was a she. Also because I had an affinity for the movie Willard and it is what spawned my want for a pet rat. Socrates learned how to ride on my shoulder and climb out of her cage. Id lay in my bed and she'd climb out to cuddle with me. When she had to potty she would return to her cage to do her business. She was very well trained and very smart. She would do just about anything for a strawberry yogurt chip. When I went off to college she had to stay home because...go figure...rats were not allowed in the dorms. When I came home for summer vacation my father warned me that she was not well. He said she just sits on the bottom of her cage and is refusing to eat or drink. I had to accept she was going to die. But...when I walked in the room...she immediately lifted her head up and sniffed. Then she climbed out from her cage and sniffed me all over finally resting by my face and kissing me with her nose. We were inseparable all weekend and she was eating and drinking well. I thought maybe she had turned a corner...until I went back to school. The day after I left I got a call from my dad saying Socrates had passed. I think she waited to see me one last time before she died. She was a wonderful pet and I still miss her. :hit
