any partial vegetarians out there?

Our adventure in chicken keeping began with my daughter (then 15) deciding that she didn't want to have anything to do with the suffering and unhealthy lives of most of the animals we eat for meat. We started by raising 8 egg layers and by purchasing a big chest freezer and buying a 1/2 heifer from a local hobby rancher who could discuss with our daughter how the heifer had been raised, transported and butchered. That led to us raising 35 meat chickens last summer and finding a local rancher who raises lamb to our daughers very high standards. So, most of the meat we eat we either raised ourselves or know where it came from. When we are out at restaurants, I'll order meat from the menu, but my daughter goes vegitarian.

Yes, husband and I eat very little meat compared to the average US citizen for multiple reasons including, but expanding beyond, animal welfare conerns. We are working towards raising our own meat animals, but that will take some time. We should be able to get three hens for eggs this year at least.

That said, we just moved states, and have to start all over again in finding local suppliers for our dairy and meat. Also, our new housemate is big on store-bought bacon and fried chicken. I made a pact a long time ago that I will eat whatever other people serve me, including commercially farmed meats, so we have had an increase in those two food items within our diet. On the flip side, she has been eating a more balanced diet since we mostly cook. She has remarked that she has never felt better or had more energy, and is very open to locally/humanely raised chicken and bacon when we do find some.

Also, we have cut out high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. We try our best to limit corn and corn products, as well as soy, for both health reasons and GMO concerns. Honestly, we just try to limit corporate products period these days, as we have not been impressed with corporate systems.

I felt compelled to ask this question (and i'm glad i'm not alone) because I am not well loved in vegetarian forums where bleeding heart vegans or vegetarians think it's WRONG to eat all meat- all the time (which is fine for them). it's very isolating! i just want to say- yeah, i am not going to eat the wrong kind - as much as i can help it... but i am going to eat it 'ethically' and safely a few times a year.
having said that- i'm quite happy with vegetarian cuisine as well.

We need to come up with a new word for someone that only eats ethically raised meat! It's not vegetarian, not conventional, kinda like paleo but not all those folks eat ethically raised meat......Ethitarian?

"Ethitarian" is the word we've been using to describe my daughter's diet; limiting meat to sources she has interviewed and meet her standards for humane care, feed, lifestyle, butchering etc. If those sources are unavailable or if she is unsure, she goes vegitarian. Away from home, she usually just says that she's a vegitarian, because the explanation gets too lengthy and (sometimes) argumentative.
