a lot of times when a house sits empty the water left in the pipes wile gather at the lower spot and freeze and do what you have described I repair mobile holes all the time with this type of problem.

what would you suggest?

That valve is probably rated to 100 psig. Sounds to me, when the valve was installed it was not done properly.

I think you need to hire a plumber, especially since you started the thread asking for plumbing advice. A licensed plumber will be able to determine whether the installation is faulty or the fixture. They can often repair fixtures when a part is not working properly (such as just the valve), and usually have discounted rates on new fixtures, should the entire fixture need to be replaced. Most shower valves are heat sweated in (I am assuming you have copper piping), which is not necessarily a skill that everyone has learned.

What brand is that? I can't tell from the picture. Some companies have made their faucets look like Delta's. My husband was a plumber for 25 years. He might be able to help by just telling you, but maybe not. It's alot harder to tell someone how to fix something without physically seeing what is going on. It could be a number of things.
