I went to lowes yesterday and bought a new faucet. I told them my problem that I felt my faucet was installed without a retainer clip. i told them I could not wait a week for Moen to send me a new one. the guy said for me to buy the faucet, take the retainer clip out of the package and when the one comes in from moen to replace the clip and return the package. so that is what i did. i also told moen what i was doing and they said that was not a problem.
So I have a shower again. and i fixed it myself, with a little help from my friends of course.
orchid, tell your dh i appreciate his help and thanks to everyone else who chimed in and help unravel this puzzle.

We have something partially plugging the Cold Water in our house, we have low pressure there, but only in the house, it is fine outside, so we know it is something in the line. Just have not gotten around to tracking it down yet......
I redid a friend's shower, and since the plumbing wasn't bad, I decided to leave it undisturbed...But, they had very little water pressure at the head...I took the valve apart and dicovered small pieces of teflon tape, blocking the flow.
After some detective work, I realized that this is probably a common problem with people who use teflon tape...In wrapping a joint, if you allow the tape to fall over the end of the threads, and into the pipe opening, this gets cut off, in the tightening process and enters the valve...On open faucets, it's not a problem, but in shower valves, it can get trapped.
I'm glad you got this fixed. You did a great job, fixing it yourself. I can't believe how nice the guy at Lowes was. They don't have one around here, but that is some great customer service they have.
