Any recommendations to increase the amount of protein for my hens?

Both would probably be too far to be practical for you if you're in the Ocala area. Some of it comes from Alachua Feed & Seed in Gainesville and the rest from Sparr Farm Supply.

There are many feed dealers in the Ocala area though so anything I could buy in my area is already available to you in your area. Seminole Feed is in Ocala as well and I believe at least in their company owned stores they carry their own line of poultry feed. Haven't tried it myself though as there is no local source that I know of.

Specialty items I often buy from Eric at Pampered Pullets Farm. He's a board member here and we've done a lot of business together.

Seminole has good poultry feed.

I sometimes get a bag of the high protein supplement Equalizer and mix it with the layer pellets 1 part to 4 parts. Lots of good stuff in there including alfalfa meal, soybean oil, and yeast culture. Its a 32% percent protein.

Feed compainies only give the min amount of protien for laying hens. That is the 16%. It is OK just for the light breeds that lay. The heavy and dual purpose need higher protien to grow right and produce. 18 to 20 percent is better for them. Chickens are not herbivours but are omnivours which means the eat animal protiens. Most feed is not made that way and it shows in the hens production. If you hens are laying they are breeding and breeding animals need more to keep in top condition.

Does higher protein correlate to more egg production? My australorps have totally stopped laying. :( Should I give them a higher protein food? They are big birds.
