Hi all,

Since I have no construction experience at all, and no time (I am in college), I am looking to buy a coop/run rather than build one. I have 8 hens and one rooster. However, all the places I've looked at online -- Petco, etc -- have bad reviews for their chicken coops, such as that they are too small or too flimsy. Do any of you have suggestions for where I could buy a good coop?

Thanks!
Phyllis

Craigslist

Find a 'handyman' in the newspaper

Talk to the High Schools / Tech Schools -- maybe a student needs a project for class

Get a 'kit' to build a shed from Home Depot.

Dog kennel and a shipping crate?

Good luck

lowes has a 8x8 wood shed for $750 and for the run you can use a 10x10 or 5x15 dog kennel for $220, you can buy a 10% off coupon from e-bay for $1.50 , this makes your total costs of around $900,

The premade coops and runs seem to exist only in the cheap and flimsy and the expensive range. Even the large tractor types I wonder about storms blowing them over.

I had a guy that was advertising on CL to build mine. Here is a couple of pictures of mine. The metal runners and 4x4's under the coop I added recently to I could move the coop easily.

Mine is very well built and fairly heavy. He used screws in most of the construction.
