Any South Africans on here?

Where on the south coast did you live? We spent most of our holidays either at the beach on the south coast or in the 'berg. Those darn ticket prices need to go down!! I have a sister-in-law and three nieces and nephews that I have never met and my kids don't know my family at all... sad.

I grew up opposite San Lammeer near Southbroom/Margate on the S coast & went to school at Treverton in the berg (Mooi River) near Giant's Castle.

dried meat - much like Jerky

only much better

The only thing better than biltong is "droewors" (dried sausage)

... bournville chocolate is a close runner up though

Greetings from SA.

OMG - I wonder if we bumped into each other..... when were you in East London?

I also lived in the quigney for a while (fitzpatric road I THINK - I'll have to check a map) I lived right up the road from the Dorchester Hotel..... LOLOL

My father is a Doctor in East London, he lives on Gately street - did you work at St.Dom's?

OMG what a small world!!!!!

A very small world indeed. Born and raised in East London. Just moved to Kroonstad in the Free State at the end of 2011.

I remember all the events you mentioned and know all the roads. Flip, East London never leaves your heart hey.

Realise your post was a while back, wondering how you are doing. Back in SA?

Well, I have been busy moving around the USA so haven't had much time or decent internet for getting on here. Still haven't been back to SA - 10 years now!! Someone isn't listening to my cries for cheaper tickets!

So lovely to hear all the different connections to our beautiful country. I miss it, but am glad to not be dealing with all the violence and crime on a daily basis anymore.! I used to work in ICU and casualty and there was a constant barrage of violence related injuries. I have no idea how many people I certified DOA and how many we lost as a result. I am happy to be dealing with chickens and moving stressors instead of wondering if a random crime is coming our way in the near future. I still have family in SA and of course many dear friends .... and I miss the beaches so much!! I try not to think too much about SA because then it gets overwhelming ... too long, too long!

I've been to Kroonstad a number of times - though I don't remember much about it now. Been too long since I was there. It is so dry here - back in Colorado that I think I really should make a big batch of biltong! Mmmmm, I am sure my family will be delighted :)

We are in the throes of looking for a property for us to move to ... we have only 4 hens (bantams) at the moment. Our landlord gets a little nervous if we look like we are going to get more. I can't WAIT to have our own place again and to have a real coop. I can see we will have to plan for black bear raids though - that makes me a little more than nervous! Might just have to read up more about that.... but rather black bears and mountain lions than somebody coming after you with malicious intent huh?

I went back to SA for a visit last September & I
was happy to be gone by the end. It just gets worse & worse. Still the most beautiful place ever though. Such a pity it's impossible to live safely there. I'm off to Australia in March & we'll see how it goes there.
Hot wire/electric fencing is the only solution for bears. They can go straight through wood or any kind of wire/mesh. At least they respect strong hot wire. In SA, the thugs just use insulated pliers to cut it or trip the alarm until the owners turn it off, thinking it's broken.
