Any South Africans on here?

Oh my! I have been out of touch for a few weeks and now I see all these answers! Wildsky, Sawubona, unjani? I am not sure how to spell the Zulu words! Are you also from Natal? Which part? Where are you now? I make my own biltong and I have yet to taste jerky that comes anywhere close in taste, but then I have only tasted store bought jerky which I am sure is not the best there is!

Yup, I am 'permanently' in the USA. Just recently got my US citizenship - am now a dual citizen because I can't imagine no longer being South African! And I just bought a little potjie so I can make potjie kos and pretend I am in SA again.

Come on now Wildsky! You need to answer, it is crazy to hear just that little bit and now nothing! I have been way too busy these last weeks with spring and trying to get trees planted, vegetable garden prepared, seeds started, brooder made, eggs turned etc etc!!! I love spring but it sure is a super busy time of the year!

My Family is from Zimbabwe and my Grandmother went to the university of cape town. Does that almost count?

It must be hard to be so far away from home.... but if you have to be it is best to do it in the Carolinas. Aren't they beautiful???

Happy Chicken Mama

Happy Chicken Mama, yes that sure is close enough to feel like you're from 'home'. A lot of my friends are ex-Zimbabweans, ex-Rhodesians, 'when- we's ' and I have been up there a couple of times. I spent a week on Lake Kariba on a house boat which was awesome! And have ridden horseback with zebras and giraffes. I have been whitewater rafting down the Zambezi (which I hope I never have to repeat as I nearly drowned....

) Anyway, some lovely memories of Zim. Where are you now? Have you ever been to Zim or SA?

And yes, the Carolinas are beautiful and I love our 9+ acres of forest and all the birds and wildlife. I am on a major learning curve trying to figure out the weather and which plants do well here and all the diseases and bugs and predators for our chickens etc! Seems that every plant, tree or animal has a line of predators waiting to come and chow down on them!

LOL - I never check here can you tell? LOL

HOWZIT!

I grew up in Natal till I was 16, then moved to East London. I went to school in Amanzimtoti.

I moved over here in 96, lived in California till last year, we now live in Nebraska.

Hey Wildsky!! Great to hear from you! I grew up in Howick and Hilton in Natal. I lived in East London for about 5 years before I came over to the USA. I lived on Fitzpatrick Rd right near the sea and then in various other spots. I was single and nursing at East London Private Hospital so was always moving to cheap accomodation

I am so jealous that you are going back to SA. I haven't been back for 5 years (pretty pricey tickets wot!!) I lived in Colorado for about 7 years before we moved out to SC. Colorado was great for making biltong because the humidity is so very low there, I used to make it in the basement and my husband and kids LOVE it. It never lasts more than a week or so. Now I have to make it in my dehydrator... I miss meat pies - esp mutton curry, yes samoosas, boerewors, my mom used to make koeksusters but she won't oblige now - too much effort I guess. I order some of my favourite stuff from the South African food shop online (north carolina) for special occasions. I love my Marmite and the occasional fish paste etc. My DS only drinks rooibos tea LOL and it is a lot cheaper from them than buying the stuff at the grocery store.

Boy, what I wouldn't give for a lovely SOuth African braai .... lots of familiar meat and salads... Oh well.... you'll have to say Hi to good ole SA for me when you go back!

OMG - I wonder if we bumped into each other..... when were you in East London?

I also lived in the quigney for a while (fitzpatric road I THINK - I'll have to check a map) I lived right up the road from the Dorchester Hotel..... LOLOL

My father is a Doctor in East London, he lives on Gately street - did you work at St.Dom's?

OMG what a small world!!!!!

Oh my!! Wow, I can hardly believe that you were in the same area! I was in EL from about '92 to '97. I worked in ICU at ELPH for that whole time. What field is your dad in? I am sure we could easily have crossed paths.... I had a friend that lived on Gately street - mmmm is that where the museum is? I lived in the Gately House Museum (right next to the zoo) when I first arrived in EL, my friends mom was the curator for a while! GOSH that is like a lifetime ago though! I think I have the name right.... When did you move to the USA?

I am having major flashbacks now to jogging along the 'promenade' what the heck is that section called .... and then up some killer hills back to Fitzpatrick rd house, I lived between a shebeen eventually and a hostel with some other RN's. It was such a lovely neighbourhood when we moved in there and then it was all downhill from there. People kept mistaking our house for the shebeen and banging on our door demanding drugs, drink and girls!!! We had signed a year lease so were stuck there until our lease expired but boy what an experience! I was helping a guy who had been stabbed in the chest just up the road and tried to go inside to call the ambulance but I had locked myself out of the house and had to use the shebeen/ whorehouses phone! Yikes! I used to be part of the endurance horse riding club for a few years too.... You say you have a horse....
