This is not a happy time for our huge year old turkey.
He isnt able to get around anymore and is not enjoying life. He's been a pet since he was a week old and could fit in one hand.
I just can not cut his head off or anything like that, so in my searches for ways to do this if you are a weenie, I found the Dry Ice Method for chickens which sounds very humane. But I cant think of a way to adjust this for a turkey of his size. The chicken threads say to use a rubber made tote with a lid. There is my problem. He would literally require something the size of 2 1/2 or 3 of those long large totes put together! No kidding. He's huge.
Another idea is the starter fluid method with a rag over his face. That will require a little more guts on my part... but I think that may be my only option.

I need to toughen up.
I've put htis off for about three weeks now, and it isnt fair to Butterball anymore.

I also read about that method and have a large pet turkey who may need to be put down... I'm so attached to her that I found a farm vet to euthanize her if she doesn't get better soon.
I recently put a post up about what could be wrong with her since I'm not quite sure and even the thought of trying to get her to a vet for whatever reasons seems complicated.

What exactly is the starter fluid method?

good luck - maybe there is a drug that they could be given via the mouth that would do them in?

I read that the starter fluid has Ether in it.... so for a large bird (like a turkey) you spray a cloth (a lot I imagine) and hold it over their face. Just like the movies where the bad guy does that I guess. For a chicken you put it in a box, spray 3 sprays and close the lid. Within a couple of minutes the bird is asleep and just never wakes up.

No vet around here seems to know a thing about any of our birds (chickens, a turkey and ducklings) so we are left to this wonderful forum for help. Its been great, too!!

I have found a lot of great info here, hopefully you'll get some answers that will help you with your girl.
Butterball has never been sick. What is yours doing (sickness)? How old is she?

I have tried the starter fluid method on chicks, and I will tell you that it's NOT FAST!

I felt so bad after doing that a few times, I stopped using it. It was just easier (not really) for me to wrap them in a cloth and yank their little necks. For bigger birds, it's just better to cut off the head. It's fast, but not pretty. For turkeys, you're gonna have to double team. Butchering one to put in the freezer, my husband ended up with bruises on his arm from the wings beating him.
