I got my chicks today from MPC! Woo hoo! My first chickens ever!

Anyway, 3 of them seem to be doing fine. They cuddle or hang out beneath the heat lamp for a while, then wander around and drink, eat, explore their surroundings, etc. Then they return to the heat lamp a bit. As far as I've read, this seems to suggest I at least have the right temp for them in the brooder. And, they seem pretty chipper--they were drinking and eating and pecking at the thermometer right away.

The fourth one, however, doesn't look so good. It just sits, huddled into itself, without moving anything except its head every once in a while. I picked it up and dipped its beak in the water two or three times, and it seemed to drink each time. But then I moved it under the heat lamp because I was worried it was getting too cold. It's not really moving and I'm worried about it. Any suggestions for things I should try?

Thanks!

Some chicks seem to feel the trip more than others. If you haven't already, put some sugar in the water. 1 tablespoon per gallon but some put 2 in if the chicks are really stressed. I swear by GroGel, it seems to give them a nice pick me up after a long journey. Make sure that he/she is warm enough etc and beyond that, there really isn't a ton you can do. Some give vitamins with a dropper. I have never done it so maybe someone who has better knowledge can help you there.

Good Luck

Does it have poop stuck to it's butt? If so use a warm paper towel and gently wipe it off. Then dry it, too. I had a couple peeps this year who got stopped up. Cleaned them and checked them for a couple of days and now they are fine.
