Hi! i have some questions i would like answers to but first you need to hear the story.. i have 3 hens. An americauna, miley,an aracauna, glenn, and a cochin, jenni. I used to have 5 and one roo ,but sadly, we had to give Henny, penny, and Sam (the roo) away. They were a little disappointed at first , but they learned to love the new life! I've had them at the house for 8 months now and they've been completely fine. Miley got her neck stuck in the fence and we put her at the neighbors coop for recovery. Jenni has never liked her , but she's always pecked her. Jenni recently started laying eggs again (she wasn't for quite a while) and just about a week ago she stopped. And she won't get out of their "laying egg box".

i have to physically take her out and set her on the ground. I cannot watch her all day (I have school) and I have a feeling she stays in there all day, but I have no proof. I did some research and thought maybe she has bugs. I started watching her more carefully and I saw some strange stuff. She is always fluffing herself up and fixing her feathers. And she flaps her wings and screams(which I've never seen before). I tried to search her feathers but all I got was a poop on my lap.. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong..?? If you have any suggestions PLEASE let me know.. I really love her and I want to find out what is wrong.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a broody hen, Jennie wants to sit on and hatch eggs. Cochins are a very broody breed and you can pretty much expect them to go broody every year. You will need to decide if you want to get some fertile eggs and let her hatch them, or if you want to "break" her of being broody. Cochins are pretty stubborn about being broody so you probably don't want to let her just go on indefinitely (she may stay broody for months) if you aren't going to let her hatch eggs. There are a couple of nice articles in the Learning Center on broody hens you might want to read through https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/broody-hens and https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/guide-to-letting-broody-hens-hatch-and-raise-chicks and https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/encouraging-or-discouraging-broodiness-in-your-hens

Kelsie2290 thank you so very much! I'm almost positive that she is just broody! I read those articles and that helped a lot. Do you know anything about her fluffing up her feathers and always messing with them? Is it because of her broodiness? Thanks!

Yes, she wants to hatch eggs. If you don't have a rooster with her, they would not be fertile. If you could get some fertile eggs(any breed) and put them under her - she would hatch them and feel fulfilled for the moment.

Welcome to BYC!

No need to worry about Jennie. As the others have mentioned, she is only broody and wants to hatch some babies of her own! You have been given some great links here to follow. So I will just welcome you to our flock and may Jennie bring you great joy all throughout her life!
