I candle on day 9, if the inside is dark, it's a keeper, if light passes through it wasn't fertile or didn't make it. I weigh them on day 9 as well, and weigh once more on day 15 (lock down day). The scale does a pretty good job of letting me know if things are progressing well.Actually, I do have a tip. The normal flashlights won't see through most of the darker speckled quail eggs. The 1000 Lumen high powered hand torch is needed to see into the shells. Don't burn yourself. These get hot. Other option is not to candle. I'm good either way.
x2, except Coturnix take 17-18 days![]()
Lucky! Mine took all 18 daysMine have always hatched at 16 days and sometimes at 14 & 15.
I thought that late hatches were because the incubator ran a bit cold? I'm curious because I'm going to be hatching my first batch of quail next month, and I've been testing my incubator out. The temperature setting seems to be within 1/2 a degree of the thermometer/humidity monitor I bought separate and put inside.Sounds like your incubator may run a bit warm.
