Any tips on how to make a hen broody?

Well, 2 of my first 5 hens had chicks when I got them; only one of those hens continued to be broody. Then she died and for weeks not one hen looked as though she were going to "take over" -- out of no where -- the hen I would have least expected (hmmmm. - well the second one anyway) started setting on the eggs that I had left in the box. I left 3 and marked them so I'd know the difference and voila' .......
I will keep y'all posted if you'd like....
I just don't see anyway to "make" a hen broody. They just seem to either be that way or not. And apparently, they can change their minds to.
Oh, one of the hens I got that had chicks became a chick killer to! Go figure.

I'm not gonna say I can make it happen, it may just be a coincidence, but if I don't gather eggs regularly and let them pile up in the nests it makes my hens go broody.
