We don’t have racoons or possums but i will look into better wire. (Or hardware cloth). I’ll supply them with mixed grit regularly, and they also have a bit natural from the soil.

Luckily they’re not really in the uk!Your luck then. They are a real problem for most poultry keepers.
We get owls, we have netting on the top of the aivery. Hopefully that should deter them. You may not know you have certain predators until you tempt them with a smorgasbord of quail. We knew owls were around but they weren't in our yard until we moved the quail outside.

I have heard that foxes can destroy chicken wire. We have seen a few foxes down the street from us near a farm. I worry that they may venture into the neighborhood and try to get my chickens and the quail that I'll have in the yard soon (still in the incubator). I have hardware cloth surrounding my run except for the portion that is walled by my greenhouse. Greenhouse makes up some of the "fence" around the run and the rest is 6 foot tall picket fencing with at least 3' of hardware cloth. I did not put a skirt in the ground, but may do so come Spring. We are now thinking about moving the chickens behind the shed and walling off the back 4ft of the shed as a walk in coop, so the skirt would go there as part of the new run setup/move.Oh I see. Do you have much trouble with foxes or weasels? I wonder if a small weasel could slip through chicken wire?
