I think the whole idea is that this is an alternate universe. In the original series there were many differences, starting with Kirk's birth. In the conversation old Spock has with Kirk (in the cave) they touch on that. I thought it was a clever bit of writing myself. They allow the original characters to be taken in entirely different directions, while keeping the look and feel of the mythos. It is a fanfiction writer's dream to be able to do this with characters that you love.

Overall I though this was a wonderful production. I loved the musical homages to the original series, as well as the visual.

One other thing- It was known in all star trek movies that paralell universes can not meet... so whats up with spocks meeting - himself?
