Anybody else grow mulberries?

they get big, and they have a wide branch spread and they grow fast, and their offspring do also; we have on the steps of our apartment, its probably from the 1950's... its fruit falls on our stairs etc, but also in our garden and the babies sprout up very quickly, which is why someone bothered to plant them in the first place... also they are good forage for goats et al... they are crazy about the leaves... and the tree is hardy even after being foraged by lots of little hooves and teeth...

the leaves are great as ground cover in the chicken coop, and the flowers that fall are now going in to said coop... but the fruit are a pain when its at the entrance of your house, also the dogs track the flowers in side, they cling to the dogs fur... and the fruit sticks to the bottom of shoes...but great shade tree..

The one I planted after first starting this thread made it thru its first year and I *hope* is going to make it thru its 2nd.

At my place the problem isn't birds, it's the dadgum DEER. They nearly stripped the thing about 15 times last year. It has tiny buds on it so I think it's still alive, but I've netted it now so hopefully the deer won't be able to get to it, if it's still living.

And yes, I remember the "joys" of mulberries on pets, shoes and clothes - so it's planted WAY away from the house! :D
