Anybody else having sticker shock on coffee?

You are very right about the non organic coffee being very bad for you! Not to even mention that brands such as folgers are not buying Fair Trade beans. I dont have enough money to by everything organic and fair trade, but I dont ever waver on coffee, bananas, and soy products because of the horrible amount of pesticides and fertilizers in them otherwise.

EEEKKK! I am usually pretty on top of things when it comes to buying organic and what not. Some how coffee escaped me looking into it. Guess, I'll be buying organic from now on. I don't buy all things organic, but I try to pick which are the most laden with pesticides.

How long will ground coffee last for? I usually grind the whole bean variety at the store. I've heard to throw it in the freezer then don't throw it in the freezer. So which do you guess do? I am going to Sam's Club and I believe they have organic coffee, but I usually don't buy that large of an amount. I have two cups in the morning and hubby has one maybe twice a week. So it would take us awhile to use it up.

Like everything else it was only a matter of time. I can remember when you bought the coffee in 16oz bags, now it is 12oz bags. Coffee isn't the only thing that is doing this, candy bars is another one. I am not a candy lover by any means, but I have watched them shrink in size and grow in cost. I haven't seen it yet in sugar or flour, shrinking in packaging, but the have increase the price. Personally we purchase our coffee from a coffee house that our daughter works at.
Enjoy your day

Just get the cheepie grinder from Walmart for $15 or Tuesday Morning has a nice Cuisinart burr grinder for about $30 I think, if you like the finer smooth espresso taste. It really makes such a better cup to have beans ground within the last couple of days. The Cuisinart is nice because it has a hopper that holds a whole bag and you set how many cups to grind, hit the button and done. I used to have a fancy $400 espresso machine and gave it up for a $30 moka pot that I cook on a cast iron pan on the stove. It finally cured my problem of breaking the glass carafe constantly. Frankly the coffee is better in the moka.

I am very grateful that I am to lazy to make my own coffee. This way I am not addicted.

ditto.

SOooo. Anybody know some homegrown coffee substitutes they've tried firsthand? Chicory root, dandelion root, Kentucky Coffee Tree? I have plenty of dandelion root out there...

Costa Rican coffee growers are happy, too! And my DH just bought a jar of Crunchy Jiff at Wal-mart yesterday for $4.99...he's not a snob about anything - EXCEPT his Jiff Peanut Butter.
