Anybody else on LOCKDOWN?? Hatch day Aug. 5th!

I so far ended up with 17 chicks, one will have to be culled though. I could see it had a cross beak when it pipped, but it is much worse than that. It's whole head is twisted to the side and the brain is exposed on one side, plus the eye is missing on that side. I'm surprised it has made it this far.

There are still two eggs that aren't due for a couple of more days and there are 6 under my broody. Last I checked two of those were pipped. If all goes well that would make 25/31 eggs hatched.


5 of the eggs were BCM roo X cuckoo maran hen. She gave me 4 girls and a boy. YAY! I suppose I ought to go give her a treat.

Bananas...Dont worry...that happened to me yesterday...Hen Master said he had pips and shells crackin.....I was like that is not fair!!!!! this was at 430pm. And I mean NO MOVEMENT, NOT A SOUND...NOTHING MOVED, CRACKED...NOTHING!!!!! So at 530pm I went to check, sure enough!!!!!

i had a shell that was pecked, and it was starting...from 530pm til 1am...that baby still wasnt out!!! only one leg...this morning at 8am...it was out and moving around, and I have 6more, with shells wide as a quarter coming in!!!!!

Well!! From rocking to chick in about an hour!!

This first baby is out, and I'm praying for more- these eggs have so much against them- a long drive down a gravel road, moved to a different location, after being shipped and gone through all that goes with that...

My friend who owns these really needs a win, but her hatch rate has never exceeded 30%, so I'm not terribly encouraged, but I'm hopeful, nonetheless.

When I candled the two sets that are due the 8th and the 11th, I had only 4 out of 18 that looked good, with 3 quitters and the rest seemed infertile- she payed a bloody fortune for these eggs- BCMs and Penedesencas.

I hope she gets some good chicks out of what's left!! I'd be so sad for her- she's got a very ill father and just had to cull over 50 birds due to what may be coryza...

...and no, I'm not going anywhere near her farm, nor is she coming here!!


1 chick out of 28 so far, but I should just not count the infertile, right?

I just had one that looked full but didn't make any noise- had set it aside in the hatcher in case it wasn't good- go from nothing to out in 2 hours!

Geez- these BCM pop out once they finally decide it's time to go!!

Does anyone else think LGs have a really cruddy design? The exposed heating element is too close to the chicks and seems like it ought to be higher...

We had 5 Bantam Sumatra chicks to hatch yesterday. We us cochins to set our eggs. I made a incubator a couple of years ago but only got about 50% hatch rate. Switched to cochins and now get 100%.
