Anyone straw bale it? Curious about it

We're trying it this year. You have to prep the bales by watering and using blood meal on them for about ten days before planting. We've gotten that far but then got hit with freezing temps and a freak snowstorm so we haven't planted yet.

I'm with you wyoDreamer on the hybrids producing and being disease resistant. I planted almost all heirlooms last year and spent all that time and effort and got almost nothing in produce. The plants died or just simply never produced. If I was growing just for fun that would be okay but since I'm growing to feed my family, I need things I can rely on.

Just took these pics of my lettuce and potatoes in the greenhouse yesterday.

This is our leaf lettuce in a few varieties. We like the cutting mix from Cooks Garden the best but also buy (speckles trout) Flor????? from Territorial seed too. The cage is to keep our yard cats from digging in the beds.


These are potatoes from the yukon gold we grew last year. I planted these about six weeks ago in the greenhouse and they are now ready to be hilled for the first time. Have another set of russets that I'm going to plant in grow bags I think that I need to get out this week.

I would love to do heirlooms, but haven't had good look.

I have started peppers of all kinds, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and eggplant inside so far. I'm expecting to start tomatoes within a couple weeks- almost all heirlooms....all to be put outside in May.... my grandfather never did any outdoor planting until Memorial Day! Otherwise it could all be snowed under, or in my case washed away in a late season flood....In fact, we're expecting a lot of snow tonight....

I love love love fresh peas. Mine are about 8" high now.

just replanted tomatoes and cucumbers into bigger seed pods, I can't believe how fast they grow. I've been using newspaper for seed pods and a mix of soil less soil, and does it ever work good. Vermiculite, perlite, and peat moss. I put the soil into the pods, then water them from below and so far so good. The only thing I can't start are onions. I tried last year and didn't have any luck and again this year not having any luck. The onions will sprout, grow to about 2in then fall over and dry up. anybody have luck with onions from seed. Looks like I'll get onions from the nursery again.

I started mine in a hoop-house this year. We started our beans and tomatoes already in that, and we have broccoli, and cauliflower, and lettuce started outside already.

I've never tried onions but I tried leeks three years in a row with no success. I'd love to know how to do it.
