Anybody Else Waiitng [Im]patiently For Chicks?

THEY'RE HEEEEEEERRREE!

OMG. Too cute too!

Everyone seems happy and alert; except the little polish, who is smaller and not really understanding the whole 'drink from the saucer' part. I ended up putting her in the saucer and she drank, so I think they're all just exhausted! I can't imagine in the first 2 days of life being hatched, shoved in a dark box and then mailed somewhere. Poor babies.

My cochins are fat and happy though!
The polish belongs to a friend, I'm just chick sitting for her until she gets home, and the 3 buff stars went to another lady who came and picked them up as soon as I called to say they were here.

Here are some pictures :)

[I'm very happy with mypetchicken.com. The shipping time was acceptable and my chicks look alert and healthy, plus we were able to get sexed chicks! lol]

Now I just need to come up with names :D

Just logged in for Rogers,

TSC has a nice article on bees in the latest issue. I have no bees at this time, but I have delivered them a few times when I was a mailman. No big deal to me, as I'm not allergic nor afraid of bees.

Now for coops? I'm nearly finished with my third hoop coop. This one is a half coop. 50" x 8' . I've written down all the measurements for each piece, but here is a pic of the first one. I have a double that is only covered with tarps. The only rooster w/o frost bite was the one in the hoop coop. Ventilation is a must, since this last week it got to 105* inside. I'm attaching a run on the front in this pic. I covered it with plastic for the winter but had to uncover the front of the run as it got to warm when the day was sunny. Chickens can deal with cold but not the heat nor humidity.

Average cost depending on your options is $200.00 for a half coop. Maybe less. It will house 6 large birds easy.

I have two halves that are covered with hardware cloth front and back. Chicken wire over the top, with two feet up around the bottom of hardware cloth. In the pic it's afternoon and sunny, in the morning it's shaded. When winter comes I'll play it by ear and perhaps cover the back with burlap, felt or some other cloth. This one will be covered with a camo tarp with and over hang of 4 feet I could only find Camo tarps at Tarpaflex. Cheaper I think than TSC. $31 for a 10 X 20 .

Yea, glad you got your babies.

I ordered from Cackle back in April, asked for delivery week of June 4th, received all the Light Brahams, and 1/2 Buff Brahams. Thankfully Cackle put us back into rotation for the rest of our shippment for this week. Got notified they were shipped Monday night and had been tracking since, as of last night it still showed deliver tomorrow morning, but we got a call from the Post Office they were in

so I drove as fast as my little car would move and got the new babies. I was owed 12, they sent 14 but one was DOA (so sad). It was about split, those active and drinking and eating and the ones who seemed worn out from the trip. My DH was home today and has been checking on them and said they seemed to be okay.

Chicken math struck

after the first order was shorted and we ordered from Welp Hatchery 25 Dark Brahams which should be shipped today. I expect them on Friday if shipping is similar to Cackle.

Sorry about your DOA little one. Honestly I was scared [heart in my throat] scared that mine wouldn't make it...only 2 chirps were coming out of the box. Luckily everyone seems to be thriving.

The poor little polish is so much smaller than the other two...She has such spunk though! Everyone seems happy and healthy, I hope that they stay that way.

I'm giving electrolites now, and I just came home to find the little polish sitting in the middle of the food bowl going to town, which is an improvement over when she got here and I had to put her in the water dish so she could figure out how to drink :)

Quote: Oh that makes me nervous-- we have a Giant Schnauzer and i know she has high prey drive-- I have to work out of town once a week, and am worried about the 15 chicks that are due to arrive on the 11th (July)... Well I guess we will have to depend on the strength of our chicken run/ and my husband/daughter's dedication to chick care....

Also I thought Hatcheries shipped day old chicks because they survive shipping d/t their yolk sack's nutrition-- how are week olds surviving?

I would have preferred a 2 week old chick delivery to be honest (less time under the brooder lamp)...

If you don't have door-knobs that are more like levers instead of knobs, then your dog won't be able to get into your bedroom while you're out and all your kids (who swore they didn't leave the door open...) are gone.

Right now, I have a stronger, sealed pen to hold them and the quail that just arrived yesterday are in a sealed rubbermaid with vent holes cut in the top.

Not sure how a 1 or 2 week old chick survives a 3 day transit. Our twelve went through 5# of food in 11 days and the second 5# in 7. Bought the much more affordable 25# bag Friday, opened it last night. They are huge compared to when they arrived 2 days after hatch. Ideal sends them air mail. Hatched Tuesday, shipped Wed, arrived EARLY Thursday AM. They were all very noisy.

2 days old - June 14th, the day they arrived:

1 week old, notice the size of the foot of the Ancona on the stick:

2 weeks old, notice the size of the foot of the Cubalaya on the stick and remember these are the SMALL birds.
For identification purposes, the black and white is an Ancona, the other an Ameraucana from Ideal. The people at
Ideal say there is no Easter Egger breed and it is just a slang term. Theirs are Ameraucana. Not sure if the Ameraucana association agrees. I know that the Easter Eggers don't breed true so I guess technically are not a breed but that doesn't necessarily make Ideal's "Ameraucanas" Ameraucanas.

At this point the Blue Red Cubalayas and the Partridge Chanteclers are noticeably smaller than the others. When they arrived, only the Cubalayas looked a bit smaller.

I am anxiously awaiting my chicks to come I ordered them two weeks ago and they will be shipping the week of July 16. I can hardly contain myself waiting. These will be our first so I am a bit nervous having to get them through the mail. Our mail lady said that they will deliver the chicks to our door the morning they arrive. I'm very excited to start my new adventure.
