Yeah- I know- I'm one of the few hippies on here. I'm just looking for some tips that maybe I haven't been able to find online about experiences with making/maintaining dreads. I've wanted them for years, and DH finally agreed to help me.

Anyway, I don't have any, but wcould I use this thread to gather data on hair style and how they are maintained for my HS?

I have long grey curly hair- starting turning on me when I was 18. Seen as how we're camping, and I can't take a long enough shower to use conditioner so.....

Sure you can use the thread if you want. Hope we get some responses!

Hippies didnt have dreads. They came later. Hippies had long hair and afros. But they're not "Hip" anymore. Hip= Trendy , Stylish Hippie= (esp. in the 60's) person rejecting social convention, esp. wearing long hair, advocating sexual freedom, drug taking etc. American Dictionary.

I'm not a hippie anymore. Then again maybe I am, cuz I REJECT social convention, which NOW is sexual freedom and drug taking and any kind/color of hair or none at all.

All I remember from dreadlocks was there were a few different ways to form them. One way back combing, but letting them form the natural way was easiest, but it took awhile.

To maintain them there was a wax, but I can't remember the darn name of it. My friend used to wash hers, let them dry completely, then applied wax. She used to use a crochet hook too.

Sorry I can't be more help, because it was awhile ago. LOL

Maybe I should have said "deadheads"

Our neigbors refer to us as "those hippies".

Thanks Bluemoon & Sune!

I did the backcombing. It took longer, but they looked neater. The crochet hook is for loose loops, to pull them back in and tighten the dread up.
