You don't want to count on a broody coturnix if you want high chick production. Duh.

But if someone with a few quail wants to give it a try, WHO CARES??

I think there are just jealous people out there who wish THEY had a broody quail hen like my Lucy Lu

It's the only logical explanation!

Bottom line, is...That if you are serious about raising COTURNIX, or game birds in general, then you will need a bator, brooder, and be willing to incubate, and brood every egg yourself. It sounds hard to most, but much easier than caring for a broody coturnix hen that nets you 3 out of ?, and has an IQ slightly higher than dirt.

The small scale broody coturnix hen thread needs it's own sticky, so people who want to raise quail on a small scale can go there for info...(I promise I will never post there).

I agree with you except for 2 minor points. 1) I didn't need to do anything to care for the broody other than feed and water. and 2) I think the dirt around here may have a higher IQ.

Well, my suspicions were confirmed. One of my hens is sneaking eggs. I really doubt anything will come of it. I'm moving the birds to bigger pens soon, among other changes. But, ya know, ya never know... I've got the other pen laying and I've maxed out on the eggs I can comfortably hatch in my bator (at least this time). Silly birds!

Believe it or not, some people do have birds just for the fun of it.
