Fae,

First off...that's my daughters middle name. Typically do not see it spelled the same way.

Secondly, what kind of chickens do you have? We just started with chickens the fall. We went to a show in Columbus, Oh and brought home a pair of Sussex and a trio of barred rock banties. Then last week our kids bus driver gave us 7 Leghorn chicks. (which are not on my list of breeds we want to raise)

Right now what we'd like to do is raise some of the endangered dual purpose breeds. We'd also like to do this with turkeys. However, they also have to meet certain criteria for us. (as in personality)

Love Bloomington. That area is on our list of possible places to retire!

Hi. I live in Western Wayne County in Hagerstown.

I just got started with chickens. My chicks just started their 5th week. I have 11 BR pullets, 1 BR cockerel (he was supposed to be a pullet, but Ideal must have missed on when they were sexing them), and 7 RIR cockerels that were put in the shipping box by Ideal for warmth. All of the roosters will be processed when they are old enough leaving me with 11 BR pullets when all is said and done. I plan on expanding the flock a bit after this first summer of experience.

Do you know about Bennie Bowman who has www.bowmanpoultry.com/index.html ?

A couple of years ago, when he still raised dark brown Leghorns, I bought a couple of pullets from him and a "stray" white Rock that he acquired from somewhere. I don't have the Leghorns anymore, too flighty, but I still have the white Rock. Named her Bonnie as a play on Bennie's name.

Anyway, just curious.....

On the leghorns, did you butcher them? If so, how were they? I realize that they aren't meat birds but wondering how they'd do in the pot.

We got some leghorn chicks and I'm just wondering about eating them. Did not plan on leghorns because as you said, too flighty. But they were free so thought we'd give it a shot.

No, I gave them to a lady down in Freedom. From what I know they are only good for soup meat or broth. Pretty scrawny.

I have bought some bottle calves off of Bennie Bowman before. I didn't know he raised chickens as well. I always figured his dairy farm woud keep him so busy he wouldn't have time for anything else.
