Hi I'm looking into getting some chickens and was instantly in love with the Standard Cochins, and was wondering if they are good egg layers??

(i would like good egg layers)Some books and sites i've been to say they are and some say they are poor egg layers and i was just thinking instead of going by a book why not ask the people who have Standard Cochins, so that's what i'm doing.
THanks in advanced!!

Are you looking for a "high production" layer? If so cochins are not what your looking for..IMO. But as for laying on "their terms" they will and are a good broody bird, at least for me that have been. Good luck!

My cochins lay consistently, no matter the weather. I have heard so many horror stories about cochins not being good layers, but all mine have layed eggs ever since the day they started. Out of 40 hens I always get at least 3 dozen eggs a day.

I love my Cochins. My white one is laying almost daily, my buff went through a molt and stopped laying...but back in the fall she was laying daily also. They seem to lay something like 3-4 days in a row, take off a day and then go back to laying. Their eggs aren't as big as my Red Sex Links, but I'm still happy with my Cochins. I have 4 right now and 8 more Cochin chicks coming from Ideal in April

I LOVE my cochins!!! They are so big and so fluffy! I really don't know about the eggs, mine I think are just starting to lay again. But they are so fun to watch, especially when they are running around. Plus they have the softest eyes and faces.

They are decent layers, nice and steady as a rule. Not like a Barred Rock or anything but they do lay well enough. They have wonderful friendly temperments as well
