Anybody mixing breeds for your "perfect" chicken?

We caponize and poulardize which makes for an overall better table bird in almost every case when he procedure is done early and done correctly.
What does poulardize meant? I know what caponizing is.

These are some neat crosses people are talking about making. I am interested in the Super Blue Egg Layers/Sapphires... those would be cool to own.

I'll be working on black sexlinked green egg layers. I have a red Easter Egger cockerel and 6 barred Rock hens. It will be fun to see if they get their dad' fluffy face. I will also try to use him with my EE girls to see if I can get some hens with his coloring. I'm ordering my incubator in a few more days.

I've been doing this for years. My goals keep changing, thankfully that allows me to get more chickens!

I started out wanting high production colored egg layers. I bred brown Leghorns and Easter eggers and got just what I wanted--hens that laid a lot of large blue or green eggs.

Then I got intrigued by sex link genetics and decided I wanted a colored egg laying sex link. I decided the black sex links were easier for my purposes, so I put those hens under a sex link rooster and got all sorts of pretty barred hens of various colors. Some laid green eggs, some brown. I put the green egg layers under an Ameraucana rooster for sex linked colored egg layers. I also put some of them under my part Welsummer rooster for darker Olive type eggs. I also put the brown egg laying hens under the part Wellie for darker brown laying sex linked pullets.

I'm now looking for a nicer meat carcass, so I have a small breeding pen of Dark Cornish. My plan is to interbreed them with whatever dual purpose layers I have going next year and see how that does for carcass size. Only thing is, the Cornish aren't great layers and I don't want to really drop egg production.
If you want black sexlinked chicks, you'll need a non barred rooster and barred hens. Otherwise, if you use a barred rooster, the barring can pass to both male and female chicks. There will be no 'sexlink'. The reason black sexlinks work is because a barred hen can only pass her barring on to her male offspring. It helps if you use a rooster that had dark enough chick down. It can be hard to see the white dot on the back of the male chicks heads otherwise.

There have been some folks with some interesting naked neck projects going on. I know there is/was a colored egg laying NN project--can't remember who right off but you could do a quick search and find out. Might be a start to get hatching eggs from if the project is still active.

I know what you mean about driving the other half crazy--my poor Honey just smiles and nods, kind of like I do when he's talking about shooting/guns......but it works for us.

I figured I'd go through a hatchery, since we plan to have some other types of poultry as well. That way I can at least knock out a couple of them at once XD

I'm pretty much up on the genetics of sex links, thanks. I used the barred rooster to get barred hens so I could use them for sex link breeding. It was a multi-generational project. It was the easiest way I could get to barred, colored egg laying hens. I came up with these ladies.....

who lay huge green or blue eggs

pretty much daily---they're the bomb for layers! I first put them under my part Wellie rooster

for random colored laying sex link pullets. Right now I've got them under my splash Ameraucana for blue egg laying blue sex link pullets.....

I've got just under 2 dozen eggs in the incubator, evenly split between those hens and barred Hollands, all under the splash Ameraucana. Candled last night and everything looks good!
