Anybody quail break their neck

I never had a broken neck till now. But ...

... I have a hutch and some Guinea pig cages as quaratine, hospital and single prison which are 50 cm in height... and I had some head injuries by bouncing birds into the ceiling.
So I put 2cm foam on the ceiling in the hutch. Never had any injury there since.

Unfortunately inpractical for the Guinea pig cages ... .
Very interesting, I’ve seen my quail get startled and jump up into the ceiling and never expected them to be hurt

My very first batch of quail had two. One flew into the solid wood side of the coop and died right in front of me. The second one must have done the same, but I didn't actually see it. I took the feeder out, refilled it, and when I got back to my coop, it was dead.

I didn't take either of them to the vet, though, and this hasn't happened to any of my other birds since.

This is the picture of my pet coturnix quail a few days after she boinked her head. I keep her in a small cage at night and this is what happens when she goes into night fright mode. I padded the cage ceiling with clothes and vinyl but it still leaves her head bald when she does jump. I heard quail flight pens should be higher than 2metres at least to avoid wounds? The ceiling of my apartment is 2.5m high and she still boinked her head a couple of times. If you are looking for the height to keep them from neck breaking, though, something like 1.5m would be quite enough for coturnix quails.

Wow, well it seems like it’s fairly rare and quail dependent. Mine are a little jumpy when I open the top. So I guess for my purposes it’s not something I’m worried about if it were to happen

Please elaborate on the free ranging bit.

None of my japanese quails are very skittish, especially my two tuxedo boys who I keep together with my pheasants. Since they're so tame, I let them run around my backyard. They don't try to fly at all. I also had a pair of A&Ms who I free ranged in my backyard. They were super tame and loved to walk around my backyard and find places to dust bathe. Sadly the female died early this year :(

That is so cool. I'm sorry about your female A&M. Sounds like she had a great life though.
I'd like to try this sometime. I'll add it to my wish list. 🤞
