Anyone bought chicks from My Pet Chicken??

Another thumbs up for MPC. I got 8 chicks from them last April, all sexed correctly and healthy, no losses. I have an order in for 6 more to be delivered in April. As somone else said, their customer service is very friendly and knowledgeable. The only down side is the shipping cost can give you sticker shock but it was worth it to me since I didn't want a large order. They pack the little ones very well with heat packs and some sort of green gooey looking stuff for them to eat - it was almost all gone when mine arrived last year.

Good luck!

We've ordered from them 3 times. Every time they have been great. We lost one bantam chick and was given a credit for it. Their customer service is really good! I would recommend them to anyone.

I would order from them again. A few people have had customer service issues with them, but MPC has been on here posting that they are hiring new employees so maybe it is an issue they are addressing? I don't know, but I suspect they were under staffed for a time, but that is just conjecture on my part.

The important thing is that I would order from them again, as I think most here have said they would. One of the biggest pluses with them is that they have a great website that is very user friendly. It is a big convenience, to me anyway, to be able to order online and know exactly when something is available for shipping. The birds I got from them are good quality. There were some sexing mistakes, but that is to be expected (they only guarantee 90% correct, which is pretty much standard with large fowl) and really has more to do with the hatchery than MPC (and I would order from Meyer as well). I don't know of anyone else that sells sexed bantams because it is so hard to do and I sort of expected there would be some incorrectly sexed birds.

Overall though, I am pleased with the birds. They are higher quality than most of the hatchery stock I have ordered before. They definitely look like what they should (a big step over some hatcheries) and some of the varieties I got are fairly comparable even to a lot of what I have seen from breeders breeding to the standard. That, in itself, is pretty great for a hatchery.

I just ordered from MPC and got my 3 chicks on Thursday. I ordered from them mainly due to I only wanted a couple of chickens. The website was easy and was a great experience. I did loose one of my chicks after 3 days but she wasn't looking good the day I got her. I think she didn't handle the stress of travel as well as the other 2 who are doing very well. They arrived with heat packs which is nice. I think the time of the year had something to do with it so if you order early you have to be ready for the chance some may not make it. Customer service was nice and refunded my money and I will order again from them in the future.

Thanks so much for the feedback!! I do believe I will be going through them. My only dilema is that I really only want about 3 chicks. Because of where I live, about an hour from a major city (Portland) my suggested minimum is 8. MPC states that for large fowl, you can have a minimum of 3 if you are in a major city, 5 if you live withing 30 min of a major city, or 8 if you are more than an hour away from the major city. I know that they have those guidlines for the safety of the chicks, but it also sounds like they put heat packs in with them. Has anyone ever ordered under the amount they should have? If so, what were the results. I guess I wouldn't mind getting the 5 or 8, I just know I will have a hard time getting rid of the extras, and I really don't have the space for them. I don't want to get them from the feed store because I need my chicks to be vaccinated for Marek's. Thanks!

I ordered my five from them and had great experience. All very healthy females which i was really worried about as I can't have a roo but didn't want the agony of having to find another home. I will order from them again if/when I want more chicks.

I ordered 25 easter egger chicks from MPC and had a very good experience - would definitely recommend them.

These are the babies I ordered:

They're a healthy and friendly group:

As for ordering more than 3 chicks - I'd recommend that you always order more than you plan to keep, no matter which hatchery you go through. There's always a chance of one not making it or that you get a cockerel. And...... if you do have to rehome any, it's nice to rehome a pair or more together, instead of a single chick. I only kept 6 of my 25 easter egger chicks (sold the rest through craigslist) - you can do the same.

If you get 8 chicks, raise them up to 5-6 weeks old - till they're old enough to be out from under the heatlamps. Keep your favorites and advertise the rest to go as a group on craigslist.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go with the 8, and just sell the rest. Might have a family friend that will take some. Otherwise, I was thinking Craigslist too.
