Anyone else buy their chicks before they had a coop?

I did, bad idea.

count me in. my dh said he could have it done by the time the girls needed it they are 5 weeks old now and still no coop so i'm going to take 4 cardboard boxes i have a t work and "engineer" a bigger brooder in the shop because they've just about out grown the box they are in and it looks like it could still be a few weeks before he gets anything built

Hi my name is Kama and I bought chicks before I had a coop. It's been 9 days now without a coop. This is Chicken Addicts Anonymous right?

I do have a coop coming my way soon though. A friend has a tiny coop almost done that he was making for another friend who changed his mind about wanting chickens. Yea!

X2 on the motivation. Our four chicks are almost 6 weeks old and have definately outgrown their brooder in the garage. My husband brought them home as a surprise *LOVE* and he has been building a coop and run ever since with scrap wood from work (all free except the wire). It's almost done! We are so ready, and they are so big!

I think it's normal to do it this way. This way you know how big to make it

My girl friend and I did the same thing. Chickens without the coop. Although I did start the coop before getting the chicks, very bad weather (cold and rain every day) has prohibited early completion of the fancy “bling-bling” chicken house I dreamed up. All the framing is complete, rafters done, sheeting on the roof and half shingled. Maybe this weekend there will be an opportunity to shingle the other side? We have light snow today. Chickens are 4 weeks now and doing fantastic. I know absolutely nothing about chickens but am learning more every day. Maybe it’s me, it seems like my birds have personalities?

Of Course! I'm a procrastinator, buying the chicks is the ONLY way the coop will EVER get built. At least I have plans and a fair share of the materials. I had a huge, heavy entertainment center that we broke apart in order to move it out of the house we were selling. My girls will be nesting in beautiful drawers...

I am uncertain our efforts will be successful with these chickens. There are a LOT of hawks around here. I saw one last week snatch a cold robin out of the field. Only a hand full of feather remained on the grown. We have bears too. Not much I can do about Mr. Bear, he is on top of the food chain.

We bought our chicks before the coop. My husband has never been a builder. He is more into electronics and computers. I didn't know
he could build anything. We had them in a box in the bathroom. Anyway, after having one of the chicks fly on his shoulder while he was shaving, he was suddenly
inspired to build. I have a nice coop now.

yep...totally.

We went to look at chicks and see the breeds they had. We said we were NOT going to come home w/ chicks. We did. So they are now in a brood box in my house, and my hubs is planning on building the coop next weekend....
