This is so funny. I had just had to post. My husband shot a squirrel a few days ago b/c it was getting in my garden. The girls ran over with evil looks on their faces. My hubby p/k it up and threw it away. Now I think we should have let them it.

Squirrels are tasty! No, really! But I understand if that sort of thing isn't for everyone. They are organic, hormone free, free range......
Just a note of caution to road-kill harvesters: be subtle. In many states it's illegal for individuals to pick up/harvest roadkill. In some states you need a salvage permit. Some animals are illegal to possess (mostly wild birds) and some you need a tag, especially if it's a game animal such as a deer. Each state is a little different. Check your local laws and be subtle.
mikki717 I have personally never eaten roadkill... but I am also fortunate enough to say I have not ever been that hungry, and have been able to provide food for my kids in more conventional ways.
This comment stuck in my craw waaaay back in the first few places it was posted. Why do you have to be "that hungry" to eat perfectly good meat? I understand not wanting to deal with the blood and guts, if you aren't raised with it it isnt' easy. But...I just feel like that turn of phrase looks down on those of us who choose to find other means of nutrition other than the very modern convenience of a grocery store. That some how feeding our kids something that doesn't come in non biodegradable plastic and Styrofoam is some how inferior.
As for road kill for chickens, never thought about it honestly. They get enough protein with the mice/bugs/kitchen scraps. I'll have to ask our chicken guru what she thinks. Personally, I've never hesitated to eat fresh deadth-by-car venison, pheasant or turkey.

Feed the chickens suitable road kill. Check. A free source of protein. I would do it.
I also like the idea of "road kill" pumpkins. Just think of all the free chicken food you could pick up with a little advert in craigslist or freecycle. MOST people just toss them out after halloween or thanksgiving!

Parasites in the guts and skin, plus fly maggots can cause illness. If you really want the free food for them, I'd boil it. You could do it on an outdoor grill with a pot from goodwill or salvation army...
