Anyone else freaked out your chicken will peck your face?

Last week, I had to chase a pullet around the enclosure to retrieve my contact lens from her beak. Thank goodness she didn't swallow it! I had just turned my head to squint at her, and wham.

Yes, chickens are very curious about anything different or shiny, and eyeballs must look like grapes to them.

I too have been pecked in the eye. People think I'm starnge enough that I have a chicken addiction, but when I had to go around with aneye patch for 2 days it was a strange story. I always wear sunglasses when I hold them now. Kathy

It's interesting that this thread has come up, because I've been worried about being pecked in the face on more than one occasion. Ruby, my BO and my favorite, loves to hang out on my hand...and has given me that curious, sideways, stretched-neck look more than once. I always move her away because it freaks me out, even though she's gentle and sweet...but I feel like I'm being evaluated as a potential meal source by a velociraptor. I thought I was just being silly because I was afraid to allow her near my face!

Guess it's a good thing I haven't!!

that is not a bad idea to wear sunglasses. i have to wear glasses or contacts and most of the time i am wearing glasses, darn allergies! so my eyes are safe. but i too worry about my son.
i worked as a opthamolgy tech for six years and i saw alot of eye injuries. so be very cautious, any eye injury is painful, but also you don't want to have permanent eye damage either.

Eek! This post just makes me want to go buy some safety goggles for the coop. Seriously. I never had any idea that they would do such a thing. I'm fairly new to chickens though.

I wondered all day whether or not there would be any replies to my post or if I was being ridiculous. Glad that I asked!! And while I realize being pecked is very serious and am happy to hear that everyone still has their vision... I have to admit that I laughed out loud more than once. Still trying to imagine chasing a chicken around to fetch a contact...

I'm grateful that you shared your experiences, and the tip to wear glasses/sunglasses sounds like a good idea. I'm certainly going to be much more cautious with my dd in the future.

Just happy to hear I'm not the only one freaked out about that sideways, neck-stretched look! Started feeling like a Hitchcock movie...

OOOOOOOOOH yes. i have moles on my face and neck(not like old lady moles where they are like 2 inches high) but i know if my chickens had the chance they would peck at them in a split second!
