anyone else getting *old* eggs?

you can't tell as far as what I read. I wanted to direct this back to old eggs, you can tell the age pretty easily. I agree, you can't say they are infertile. There are so many other factors that are involved from the breeders hands your yours. If I suspect someone is sending infertile eggs I might crack one open and take a look see. I would like to keep this focused on old eggs though

I feel the same way. I buy eggs and buy eggs and they always seem like they are or were to old to begin with. I always add my own eggs in with the shipped and it gives me a clue to the shipped eggs. I now have shipped in with my own and the air sack in the shipped is huge as to where mine are fine. I am just crossing fingers in hopes that they hatch.

Sorry about your experience and I am crossing fingers for you also. I did get a batch one time that at day 3 4 were as rotten as could be. When I opened the box it smelt like Apple Hair Spray and was full of trash, hair rollers, wads of hair, etc. It was horrible and a horrible experience. I wrote that ladies city and state down on my list as 1 not to buy from.

I didnt know that about old eggs Ill look at air cells more,
with infertel eggs you should be able to tell after they dont hatch or you cull eggs that are clear by opening them and looking for a bullseye , right?

I dont have grate hatch rates with shipped eggs
4 chicks out of 24 eggs
0 chicks out of 6 eggs
8 chicks out of 24 eggs
1 chick out of 8 eggs
1 chick out of 8 eggs
2chicks out of 7 eggs
with local
1 out of 1 egg
14 out of 15 eggs
1 out of 12 (most wer not fertle only 4 grew)
9 out of 18 eggs with a tiny banty roster over a large flock of LF girls

I think its very sad if people dont send the best eggs in the best packageing possble, Yeah you might be needing money but for me to have spent 40 on eggs and get 3 chicks ect isnt cool ether and we have enough guess work when it comes with the poor eggs going thru the USPS to begain with we dont need people sending old dirty questionble eggs on top of it.

BUt for the most part BYC is the most awsome online community I have ever ran acrossed and Im very happy to be here and so many people have such big hearts

LOL, I tried opening up an egg that didn't develop, it was very *soft* and couldn't even find the white spot, never mind if there was a bullseye

. I don't know if others have tried.....but I wasn't successful in trying
eta- gabrielle, the air cell is supposed to be very small. I have received eggs with the air cell almost as small as my own eggs, they were only a day or two when they were mailed and got here in 2 days. Probably one of the best hatches I had too. The eggs I just sent were collected mostly Friday and Saturday, check out the air cells if they get there in good time...

When I cracked them open I couldn't find a bullseye. I even did one presetting them and did not see one. I mean I could be wrong but I thought I would have seen something.

well Maybe this is different for me or I'm lucky-not sure-my first batch of eggs 24 were from a BYC'er shipped-none developed when I candled at day 5-I cracked every single one of those babies open and they were not oozy but obvious a bullseye was missing-As I was getting ready to email the seller-I saw an email from her-she was awesome-she was setting some too at the same time and none of her eggs were fertile either--SHE TOLD ME THAT!! her roo was missing the "spot" she apologized and said she would replace all of them- when it was convenient for me--Have yet to take her up on it-my bator is full and have to wait till hubbie gets over that-but she was great -we email back and forth from time to time to stay in touch-This batch I have are from 4 BYC'ers-off the top of my head-From THEPETPAW-which most are developing beautifully-(the 2 polish eggs did not and Im so sad-I wanted at least one of those to make it) another gal that had predator problems and sent kinda oldish eggs-said she would send new ones if I didnt get a good hatch-which only 1/2 so far are developing-the others had to throw away-1 was stinky--another gal sent 13-1/2 are developing. Last one sent only 6 I think and only half of those are growing-I put 3 on mine in there as a test and all 3 are growing awesomely!!!! I have sent out 5 batches of my eggs--only 6-9 at a time I only have 3 hens-I collect FRI-SAT-SUN send out first thing Mon-usually...I give what I want in return-you can email me as much as you want -I love it-pester-communicate like crazy-That's what I do about Money I'm spending and I want to make sure I get most of that in return ... SO I guess I have a good experience with this buying and sending and receiving-eggs or just got really lucky with the sellers I chose??!

My eggs I have gotten from here all seem to be good it is just ones I have gotten from Ebay or Eggbid. I bought Mikado eggs and 2 were dated a over a week before they were sent. I was so mad they were super expensive!!

Yes, buyers beware on ebay and eggbid.

There is only a handful reputable people there, you need to know whom you are dealing with.

Ask lots of questions, first question should be:

How many breeders you have in this particular breed, sometimes pictures will tell the story.
If you see a picture of a pair or trio and they are selling 12 eggs run away!

If they do not answer your questions to your total satisfaction or you suspect something fishy DO NOT BUY period.

There is another seller and another deal around.

Right now there is 1308 listings for "hatching eggs" on ebay and

315 on eggbid.

When I send out eggs I send the freshest, but if I have some 7 -10 days old unsold, I will pack them in as extras. Remember, A hen usually takes about 10 days to lay her clutch of eggs b4 she starts setting. Ive also put them in the incubator when they were already sitting for 10 days, and they hatched. So why not go ahead and try hatching 2 doz instead of 1 doz, if you have room? I too , would rather have 2 doz instead of 1 doz for the same price. Eggs lose their fertility each week, and after 3 wks I agree they probably are no good. As anyone heard of refrigerating the hatching eggs . Someone told a friend of mine, he says they stay fresher.
