We got our very first chicks mid-February...3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Barred Rocks. They were all hand raised, indoors for 8 weeks. We talked to them, held them, loved them. After we transitioned to the coop/run, there quickly became a noticeable difference between the two breeds. The BR chicks were friendly and nice. The RIR...not so much. Two of the RIR girls seem more timid, skittish, but one of them is just flat out rude. She not only dodges my attempts to pet her, but she will actually lurch at me trying to peck me. That one, Cookie, is the leader, so is this common? Or coincidence? It just baffles me that two breeds known for being personable, that were raised exactly the same way, can be so different. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Hey, I have two children - same mother and father who are 180 degrees from one another in temperament. Yes there are differences between chicken breeds and even differences between the same breed obtained from varying sources. Genetic combinations are myriad.

Haha! So true! I'm not ignorant...I knew they would all be individuals, I just didn't expect at all that they'd be SO different and that it would be perfectly divided down the breed line.
