Anyone else like Brabanters??

I would've gotten em from a private breeder instead of Ideal, but there are only one or two breeders in the whole country -- and those won't sell chicks. I wanted to start with chicks rather than eggs on these, so I would KNOW what my sex ratio was -- and since even the breeders got their starts from Ideal, I figured there wasn't all that much genetic avantage to the breeders anyway!

If anybody wants eggs, start asking in another coupla months!

Many of the Brabanters did come from Ideal or originated from Ideal and work down from that. Like my Spitz, had to start somewhere along with Carla's lines (which it was LLV positive) and try as heck to cull heavy. The biggest hang up on Ideal's Spitz are the mohawks, which majority of the chicks has the polish type hats rather than the mohawks tipped forward, not backwards or going all over the place.

How are the beaks on the Brabanters from Ideal?

I got three in my order of 15 pullets a year and a half ago, and all three had scissor beaks.

They are beautiful birds, such pretty dark eyes! I really liked their personalities. I gave them all away, though, because I promised I would only keep four out of the original 15 pullets.

None of my 20 have any beak problems.

I would really like some, of course

. Just haven't gotten to that breed yet. I did not know about their being a problem with the Polish type crests. I will have to watch out for that with the little spitz chicks I hatched this year.

I have been blessed with 2, a roo and pullet from private stock. I'm in love.
Both are flighty, "scream" when you pick them up. I do love the mowhawk the little girls have. The boy is begining to crow arrrroooooOOO

Love teens, they are so fun!

How do you tell boy from girl? I can't really see any comb on my chicks, which are now around 3 weeks old. I hatched them from a BYCer's shipped eggs.

Anytime around four to six weeks you should tell by how red the combs are. If you see little buttons on their combs, more than the others, it is most likely they are males.
