remember...ARMOUR is hard to get! I had to try to cut them in half to get the right dose each day..they do not split well at all!

Armour is hard to get only temporarily, not forever.... and if you have a compounding pharmacist, he will make it for you.
The amount of time spent calling around to find a compounding pharmacy is nothing compared to how long you can spend being miserable when left under-treated.

Regarding cutting the pills, I have successfully cut the pills with a pill cutter. By hand is impossible, since they always come out uneven and one or both pieces shoots off to places unknown. I now take 4 itty-bitty pills instead of one regular pill, just for my convenience.

BTW: For anyone concerned about price, my pharmacy charges the same price for pre-made Armour as they do for the caplets they make on-site. My insurance makes my price $9, though I bought Armour for years without insurance. I paid $11. The remark about paying a lot of money for Armour was, I believe, citing the price of Armour that you can buy on-line through companies that don't require a prescription. I have considered buying from them before, but I was unsure of the freshness of the pills, and the legality of it. But it did cost a lot to bypass those finicky doctors. Last I checked, those sites were out of Armour anyways.

Another consideration: on Dr. Lowe's website, he discusses a thyroid pill that he says works as well as Armour. I would describe it as a natural vitamin for the thyroid with the T3 and T4. While it costs 3 to 4 times as much, he says it takes less to work. I have never tried it before, but I would go to that before Synthroid or Levoxyl, personally. You can order this med without a prescription. You can also have Dr. Lowe treat you over-the-phone, though I'm not sure if insurance covers this yet, and he can work in tandem with your doctor, if you have a doctor who is open to this.

As for finding a doctor who will prescribe Armour, ask your compounding pharmacist WHO in your area prescribes Armour. 3 years ago, I called around to at least 6 pharmacies before getting a helpful pharmacist. Everyone else left me with the impression it was impossible to get. Your helpful pharmacist knows who's taking it and who's prescribing it to them.

Good luck!

Border Collie....or, at least, we're about 99% sure she's about 99% border collie.

She was a roadside special. Classic BC markings, size and mannerisms, though. She really looks to be purebred.

My mom has a border collie. Well, she's bc and german shepard mix. They are awesome dogs, very smart and loveable. Hope everything gets better with her soon!

Side note, my order of Thyroid (the Canadian brand of Armour), shipped on Friday! I guess we'll see how well it works, anyone know how long it takes for regular mail from Winnipeg to the midwest? LOL, I'm sooooo impatient!!!

I just got my ERFA Thyroid today (ordered from Canada)...it's the Canadian version of Armour. It DOES have a kinda funky smell to it (but look where it comes from, right? LOL) but I am very hopeful that it'll work. I'm gonna start it tomorrow, so wish me luck and I'll update as I go!

They called you fat and you're a size 18/20????

OMG...they would call me grossly overweight then! I wear a size 22 jeans. I am 5'8" and weigh 225. I can call myself fat and I get told I am tall and carry my weight well. Bout all I really have is a belly bulge (not huge, but enough to let me know I will NOT be wearing any "skinny" jeans fora while!

) but my philosophy (however is is spelled!) is: If you don't like the way I look, don't look at me!

I would have knocked that guy's head off his shoulders if he had call me fat and said that about not getting a correct reading. It makes me so mad to hear people on tv say that size 12 is a plus size! SINCE WHEN?????

I have been on Levothyroxine for 2 1/2 years. I now take 137mcg. My main problem is I work a rotating shift every week and I tend to forget to take it. When I do remember and I keep on schedule, I feel great. When I get off schedule, I have chest pains, fuzzy headedness, anger problems, pain in my hands, arms, legs, and back (although the back pain could be arthritis from back surgery last year), stomach problems, and nosebleeds. I am now trying to really make sure I take it on a schedule. BTW: my TSH was 13. No idea what it is now, have to be rechecked in another month.

Good luck everyone.

I'm short, though....I'm only 5'4". I wasn't very happy with the guy, trust me. But I'm just gonna get over it, because I do need them to keep doing the free bloodwork for me. Oh, and the whole size 12 thing? Don't even get me started!!!

I started the Armour yesterday, and although I don't feel much of a difference I have noticed one major thing: unlike the Levothyroxine (which made me want to eat constantly) my appetite has subsided to a more normal level. Instead of craving a bunch of random food and going crazy because I either refused to eat it or because we didn't have it in the house, I don't want to eat that often. I'm taking 90mg right now, so we'll see if I need any more or if this is good.

Hurray for Armour!!!

And yes, it smells funky, guess that's so we don't suck on them like TicTacs.

Congratulations!

Actually, a NDT group I joined was talking about taking them under the tongue until they dissolve, so that's what I've been doing. They're sweet, and don't taste at all like the smell. My sister's BF came over and I showed him the pills so he could smell them, and he grabbed one and swallowed it. I wanted to kill him!! I had no clue that he was gonna do that, and it's not like he thought they would mess him up or anything. After he took it I told him to smell the bottle, and he got a little green around the gills when I told him WHY it smelled like that! He knew it was thyroid medication but he didn't know where it came from LOL!

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread, I had no idea that there was a good alternative to the levothyroxine and never would have found out if not for you all. Now let's pray that this stuff does the trick!!!
