I ordered twenty-four pullets from McMurray. I expected a 10% margin of error, so I did order more than I actually needed. What I got was almost 50% cockerels.

I can't decide if they are using staff that is completely clueless about sexing or they are doing it on purpose. I ordered two Salmon Faverolles and both are cockerels. I could tell the day they arrived because of the black feathers. How could they NOT know?

I know I could call and raise a stink and they would probably send more, but do I really want to try to find homes for MORE cockerels?

Is this common?

WOW... guess that is all I can say... WOW... 50% error.
Maybe we all need to become profession chicken sexers!!
I am interested to see the response from your post.

I split a McM order with another BYC'er and we each got a 'pullet' favorelle and both are feathering in like boys. So either the sexer was asleep at the switch or they have pullets with dark feathering. Still waiting to see what happens.

You'll have to let us know what they say.

I dont know how it works with McMurray but some companies will do a swap out.. You should call and ask if they would be willing to do so and how to go about it..

I bought from a local feed store, from the pullet pen and ended up with ALL roos! 9 in total....what are the chances!

BR and Australorp....

All have been given away or sold, and I am starting over with now, over 16 chicks, all different, some bought, some given to me....fingers crossed, I KNOW some are def pullets this time!

We got straight run from a local breeder and got 3 roos and 2 pullets. I got 6 chicks from the pullet bin from the feed store (they get from Ideal) and they were all pullets. (we also got them a week a part. 3 and 3)

I think I will stick with ideal. I would call, 50% is more like straight run!

My mom had that happen years ago. Ordered 25 pullets and ended up with mostly boys. It was very long ago and she's gone now so I can't ask if they got their money back or whatever but I know my folks were plenty disgusted. This was like... 35-40 years ago so you know it's nothing new! Hatcheries have been messing up orders for a long time. But I still think that's not the norm, but rather the exception.

My 16 pullets from Cackle have 2 cockerals.

This 4 week cockeral shows his sister how to pick a sock.
