We have 6 RIR chicks, About a week old now. They were sexed by the hatchery. Hopefully we don't have any roos as the city doesn't allow them. We have held them two days in a row now for about ten minutes each. They fall asleep in our hands. They seam to really enjoy being held so I think they will be sweethearts when they get older.

Mine may think I am a hawk because I reach in the brooder from the top. I will start reaching in from the side haha. Hopefully they will calm down and trust me more if I do that.

did they like them? i gave them to mine the other day, since my son pealed one and then decided he doesn't want it .. he is two. but they weren't interested. my last chicks always had watermelon as first treat.

Could anyone tell me if this is a rir chick please

My 2 are a year old sold as RIR but just hatchery Production Reds. Great layers, fine with people, a little more skittish than the Buff Orps but will eventually squat and are calm when held securely. They take treats from my hand when they are loose too nervous to take a treat when being held. They are predator smart. They get along ok with the Buffs that were chicks together. Though one of the Reds is the smallest hen at just over 7lbs she is head hen. Same one is being a terror with the new 11 week old chicks, wants to KILL the cockerel.

A year ago we got RIRs and they had a white lacing just on their belly, they were just a cross of RIR or production reds.I don't even think the stores know the difference.
