It was awesome, and I loved watching how he handled the chicken, with genuine affection.
Of course, when I see things like that, I wonder about the behind the scenes planning: "Okay, who do we know who can get us a chicken by airtime?!?" and the chicken owner's day being disrupted by a call to get that chicken bathed and downtown to the studio...
I usually find Colbert annoying, but this was hysterical! I get the feeling that he was taking the quote out of context, but it was still funny. How often do you see a chicken on that show?!?!?!

People kept trying to get the lady to recant it ("Surely you didn't mean..."), but she kept digging deeper and getting more detailed that yes she did mean to suggest people trade chickens or food or services for medical care as a solution. She said it more than once and she had multiple opportunities to rethink her answer.
He's had a pony on before, and a puppy, but I think this is the first chicken. I hope he and his staff find an excuse to have her on again!

oh I thought I was the only one who though about things like that. yes can you imagine the staff "Stephen the canary will be on your left and the duck and bunny to your right..." "Oh can some intern please clean up the chicken poo?" "oh look she laid an egg, can we eat it?" etc...
well from what he said a few months ago I think he lives in CT maybe he has a few chooks himself

Oh, gosh. That is really embarrassing. It's one thing to believe in the gold standard, but barter for medical expenses?! I'm not sure how to react to that idea, either
