How are hedgehogs shown? Is it like a rabbit?
Ditto!!! Never heard of hedgehogs being shown!! I love them though. They are soo cute.
I breed and show french angora rabbits.
Well, I'm not sure how rabbits are shown!
Perhaps the biggest requirement with shows is
TEMPERAMENT. Hedgehogs are nothing but prey animals with a hair-trigger "HOLY JEEZUS IT'S GONNA KILL ME" thought process. It doesn't actually count for the most as far as points, but if the hogs won't unroll then the form can't be determined anyway and they are DQ'd from what I've been told.
What is judged -
Face - 5 points (Wide, deep)
Eyes - 2 (spaced correctly, alert)
Ears - 2 (large, no nicks or chew marks from littermates)
Body Shape -
more commonly referred to as form or conformation - 25 points. Not obese, no rolls, to breaks in the flow of quills, tear drop shape is what you're going for.
Legs/Feet - 5 (well spaced, nice toenails preferred, correct amount of toes)
Color - 15 points. (Each hog is put into it's color class. They are judged seperatly for their merits, not against each other, for how uniform they are with the color standards. Pinto classes have 9 points for color and 9 for the markings - symmetry of them, which I think should be changed).
Temerament - 33 (unrolling, quills flat, personality)
Quills (thick, rich coat cover) - 10
You want as many points as possible.
Color classes are Pinto, Standard (Black-Brown), Apricot (Apricots, Champagnes, Cinnicots, Cinnamon), Snowflake, White (forms of total pinto or high snowflake), Albino, And AOC or all other colors (double whites, confetti, tris). All age groups are shown together, but from what I've been told it's better to wait until the hogs are 1 year+ before showing to let them mature and calm down.
