Anyone else still fascinated with their new chickens?

Oh I am right there with you! I talked hubby into 3 that somehow turned into 12. Honestly I just wanted eggs. Turned out I got the best little therapists ever! I really love the anticipation we have going on right now waiting for those first eggs!
The first time I saw an egg in the nest box, I almost cried...I know it sounds funny but it was just so overwhelming! Three of my four girls are laying now...two are giving us an egg every day, and a third has given us her first egg. Not sure who my slacker is...lol... My daughter and I had eggs for breakfast yesterday, plus we were able to share four eggs with a friend. I love what you said about your little therapists...I totally agree!! Being unemployed for the first time in my adult life has been very stressful, and I absolutely hate the job search process. When I feel it start to get to me, I walk outside and it all goes away for a while!

All of the above! And here I thought the "newness" would have worn off by now, but not the case. They continue to grow on us! I would add
one thing....I love seeing them with mashed potatoes on their beaks! Oh and I love giving reports of them to an elderly friend of mine (one
of my girls is her name-sake) and I love how she laughs over the phone and how it brightens her day. Chicken soup might be good for the soul,
but the chickens themselves are good for so much more. Who would have thought it? I love the peace and harmony in my flock (I know that can
change but for now it's inspiring)....oh and did I say how much I love the eggs?

I'd been thinking about getting chickens for about 2 years. The "fever" finally got so bad that I took the plunge, thinking I would finally get it out of my system. I got the girls in March.

So, first, it was the excitement of selecting what breeds I wanted.
Then, it was getting the babies and brooding them.
Then, it was watching them grow.
Then, it was planning the coop.
Then, it was building the coop.
Then, it was getting them into the coop (and getting my garage back).
Then, it was watching them grow and develop personalities.
Then, it was waiting for the first egg.
Then, it was investigating to see who laid it.
Then, it was who laid next.
Now, it's waiting for the last 3 to lay.
Then, it was finding out the banty went broody.
Now, it's waiting to see if I've broken her.
Now, it's trying to figure out what to do with all the bloomin' eggs even though only half are laying.

It's been 6 months, now, and the fun never stops.

"Then, it was getting them into the coop (and getting my garage back)."
Amen Sista!

It's been two months for me, and I need my feed room back for my horses! Chicken poop on beautiful timothy hay is not my idea of good equine health practices!

My handiman is building me a beautiful run, going to be awesome, but only one side is completed! I am ready to call the Amish for a good pen raising!

All good things come to those who wait,, ...right?

Happy Monday all!

I can't remember being this overboard about my children.

"Little Johnny just took his 45th step!"

Nope, can't see it. But, chickens and their eggs?? "Henrietta laid another egg today. That's 2 years in a row!"

What is it with owning chickens??

My first summer with chickens (yes, I have to give them away on Thursday

)
I loved the whole thing much more than I thought I would
Nothing is a chore to do for them, even emptying the poop trays.
I look forward to my afternoon treat; sitting in a rocker with a glass of wine, cup of corn and my old dog on the grass waiting for the chickens to come to me.
The are usually under the hydranga waiting for me. If I bring my kindle I can have an hour of peace, wine, petting dog, feeding hens, reading in a beautiful place
They amuse me non-stop and I respond by taking good care of them and thus get their wonderful eggs.
I love to watch them run, walk and particularly their little fluffy bottoms
I second all of your points......are we all nuts? or just loving all creatures great and small?

Oh Hi!
I have had my chickens at my summer house. I brought my eglu there and we have lots of acerage for them to room; bushes to get under, sea grass to rummage through, rosa rugosa hedges, woods to wander through and of course my lawns to scavenge.
At my other house I have 1/4 acre, little grass, no where to wander
So I am giving the hens, and the eglu temporarily, to a young family friend who has a family with young girls, is here full time and who wants them. He will bring back the eglu in spring 2013. I will give them the hens if they build a coop and they want them. Then I will get six more of different breeds to watch, take care of and enjoy next summer.
I am sad

but it is what it is and I am lucky to have had them, to have someone good to give them to and to be able to have more next year; mid-May through mid-Sept.
