I was just curious about who here starts college this semester and still has no money plan? I don't but I'm working on it. Thanks to many problems that came up over the summer I am just now getting to really work on everything and I am still trying to get a loan or student loan for school. Am I the only one who is rushing to get things together on time? And just for future reference I tend to be a procrastinator so I'm almost sure that even w/o everything happening this summer I would still be running late.

ETA: I am 20 soon to be 21 in 3 months and have only taken community college courses. I changed my mind about what I wanted to do so now I am trying to get the money together for SEMO and I had no idea it would take this long to get things going. Oh did I mention I have to go to a first step orientation and I just signed up for it? Yeah it's this friday....I am sooo doomed.

Heck with money for college. I dont even have enough money to put gas in my car. LOL...

There are so many people who live in my town with college loans to pay off, who still work at McDonalds.. Sure makes the college education seem worth it, when you cant find a job in your field.

Lol yeah I have the gas problem too. I just had to ask my dad for gas money so I can go job hunting this week. The last job I had, I was let go thanks to the stupid economy and still haven't gotten one. I babysit but it just doesn't cut it for college.

Talk with your school's financial aid office. They may have ideas about programs that can help you or jobs you can apply for. I was an RA for three years during college, which paid for my room and board. That helped a LOT! I had to make some sacrifices because of that job, but it was worth it in the end because of the money I saved.

I'm currently working on my Master's degree. I refuse to take out a loan, so I'm paying my whole way in cash. As a result, I'm taking only one class at a time. It's taking me longer to get done, but the plus side is that I only have to focus on one class at a time. I've been able to do my very best in each class with minimal stress. I'm not sure one class at a time would work for undergrad, but if you spread out your classes so that they are year-round (take spring and summer classes, too), you can take two semesters' worth of classes over four semesters, and pay less per semester (and probably have time to work, too).

How does paying off a college loan work? Can you depost a few hundred every month, or do you have to pay for it all by a certain date?

FAFSA is your friend... that's the only way we've been able to manage DH's schooling.

He also applies for (and gets thanks to his great grades) some scholarships.

Talk to the department you're hoping to join... Math, Science, Philosophy... see if they can help in addition to talking to the general school financial aid office.

I'm 32, in grad school part time. I'm paying that out of pocket (hence the part time) and my undergrad loans have always been in deferment. I'll be paying off the loans for quite some time, but I'm not worried. When I get this chicken/farming thing squared away, I'll be rolling in the dough LOL. Just kidding. But at least I'll like doing it.

I quit school because I refused to take out any MORE loans.

Now DH thinks he wants to go back to school (while we're STILL paying off the old student loans

) and he wants to relocate (well, I'm all for moving!) but I told him we HAVE to move before we take out any loans so we will still have the credit for the mortgage app. I really would like to see him get a career instead of working at WalMart, so I'm for the idea but with reservations. I don't want to rain on his parade, but I don't have a whole lot of confidence in him finishing school.

He gets all excited about a big idea, and has a tendency to quit when it gets hard.
