Big Red Roosters
Songster
I have several different rooster flocks. My smallest one has a Houdan, a Polish, and four mutt bantam projects.
Inside the coop it's about 15x15, take that with a grain of salt as I've never measured, but it's quite a bit bigger than my 10x10 pen, which IS measured.
There's three windows open 24/7 and a screen door open whenever it's not snowing.
I've been free ranging them together since they were tiny cockerels. They're all three years old. I don't know who the lead one is, as they are the weirdest flock I've ever had.
One of the weird things they do, is when I let them out to free range, suddenly two of them start fighting. Only ever two, but never the same two the next day.
It gets brutal and I usually have to intervene. Both are left with messed up faces afterwards.
But then, they're done. They peck around and are quite happy together. They call each other to the good stuff, just like a rooster does to his hens.
Yet every day someone has to try and kill each other, just for a few minutes. It's been going on for at least a year. Anyone else with a similar experience?
