I hatched a couple of eggs that were this cross and they are feathering out black??? Thought this was strange, but not real good on genetics. Anyone have an explanation? All the JG pure breedings have resulted in white chicks.

I plugged that into the chicken calculator and that is indeed what popped up. I don't claim to know anything about color in chickens, but I'm interested to here the discussion. Incidentally, where did you get your WJGs from? What do you think of them? My DW really doesn't care for solid-colored birds, but I'd really like to give WJGs a whirl.

Mine are hatchery stock, but are gorgeous birds. Have the most gentle personalities. I let them out in the afternoons after work and love the way they look walking around the yards tearing up my flower beds! Here are some pics:

By the way, these chicks are huge!!!! Anxious to see how they turn out. Not that I need any more mixed breeds.

Yep Thats what I would expect from that cross. White Giants are from recessive White Sports that popped out of Black breedings so they are Black under the White and with it being a recessive gene, the white will not show in the first generation so it is visually the same of crossing a RIR with a Black Giant. So your chicks should feather out Black with some Red leakage. However they carry one copy of recessive white so if you were to breed them together, a quarter of there chicks would be White and if you were to breed them back to the whites, half of the chicks would be white.

It's a little tricky if, like me, you don't know beans about poultry genetics. It is kind of fun to play with though and a pretty good learning tool.

RAREROO, thanks for the explanation. It makes perfect sense when somebody explains it to you.
