Anyone ever gotten sick from keeping a brooder in the basement?

i am certain i would die shortly after such a stunt, but not from sickness, the wife would do me in

I have never gotten sick and they are in my bedroom usually so my cats don't get them

In the last five and half years having chicks in the basement, I never got SICK but I do have some dust issues and if the corners are not fully enclosed, they can fling the feed far and wide. Pain in the butt after while. My furnance is in the same room as the brooder but didnt have any smell issues because I had to keep on top of it.

So go ahead and try it but remember dust and dander can make you sweep and sweep and sweep!

I am making plans of having a brooder outside looking like a garden shed or wooden lawn ornament of an outhouse. ;-)

and I got the dust to prove it

I have babies right now in a spare bedroom that I hatched out last month. I have done this off and on for a while now, and have never had any illness issues.

When don't I have a chicken in my house? I wouldn't reccomend it for people with allergies, respiratory issues or weakened immune systems. Also, practicing sanitation is important. You must keep pens/brooders clean and you must wash hands anything you touch the birds or thier equipment. But in all the time I have kept birds in the house, they havn't made me sick. I can't say the same thing for roomates, friends, family members....

My chicks grew up in my dining room for their first 6 weeks. I got two things from it.

1. Dust messaged above on the bench

2. LOADS OF FUN WATCHING THEM GROW!!!

I found that chicks in my basement aggravated my allergies. No more!

My step-dad attributes chickens to a hospitalization he had years ago. Histoplasmosis is real, folks. It amazes me, the number of people who have hand sanitizer in their purses, yet REJECT the possible dangers of keeping poultry in the house.
