Anyone ever gotten sick from keeping a brooder in the basement?

Its all about the cleaning...
When I have birds inside my pens are scooped daily and totally changed over weekly if they are on shavings line in a quarantine situation

if it is chicks on paper its is done daily

I think I have more to worry about with the fungus on my ds's feet then in the chicken poop (ps DS has to wash his feet 2X daily

I believe you do get sick from the dust.. I have asthma and it does affect me. My hatch buddie across town says it makes his family sick too.... They hatch in the garage. I believe ya... Turn the bator off and clean the house out.. air and all and see. You may need to clean out your lungs as well...

I have my brooder in the attached garage, but none are inside the house. How do you assure ventilation when they are inside?

In my garage, I open the garage door daily, for ventilation .... even when it is freezing outside. I make sure they have fresh air every day.

I don't think I could take it, with them inside of the house. The attached garage is close enough ... and I plan to have a shed brooder, outside, by this time next year! I want my garage back!

Here's my brooder .... totally free, and disposable!

because you have an underlying respiratory issue then it will affect you a heck of a lot more then someone with no respiratory issues

histoplasmosis is caused bt the mold and fungus spores from leaving the fecal matter around for to long.

Any dusty environment is not good for anyone... BUT you can have a successful hatch and have the brooder in the basement providing you have no underlying respiratory issues

I will not quarantine or brood in the basement in the winter... everything is to sealed up but int he summer windows are open the breeze is flowing I think this helps a lot too..

ETA: everyone has certain things that will set off a cascade affect with their health. for me its smells... I start with getting stuffed then it goes to a sinus infection and then throat .. and it goes from there... I dread walking into the major department stores

ok, So I have had only one brood of chicks in the garage, but I started thinking...

If you were going to have them in the basement, or anywhere in the house, you would need light, special ventilation, regular heat source, and special containers. You water constantly, and feed just as often.

You would worry about your brood, and speak to addicts all day and night... spend money online without thought... keep odd hours... Then a strange odor would start coming from your house... strange noises... young people would visit you house regularly to see your chicks.

Doesn't this sound like the cops could come raid you for a marajuana cultivation operation?

special light... No i just use the lights in my basement
heat source.... red heat lamp
special ventilation...no just an open window with a fan
special containers.... for what?
water constantly... no they have a 1 gal waterer that gets changed daily
feed.. same thing.. fill daily

spending money online without thought is nothing new for me

why would a strange odor be coming from my house? (O I live in th counrty so strange odors are the norm around here)

Cops dont just just down the door cause yr KWh has gone up a bit... they need to go up a LOT
