I searched on here for a thread about silkies mating with standard chickens, but couldn't find one.

I was curious if this was possible, and what the outcome would be.
How big are the chicks?
Do they have feathers like the silkie dad or like the mom?
I caught my silkie bantam crowing this morning, so he's definitely a rooster.
I have a variety of hens: Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, & RIR.
Also, what age can a rooster start mating?

THANKS!!!

Oh Yeah!!! Silkie roo's will mate any breed of chicken! You should my freaky looking mixes! They are pretty dang awesome! Mine mostly crossed with cochin bantams and some of them have fluffy feathers and some don't. Most of the offspring inherited the five toes though! Mine always have had the biggest eyes, not sure why but the offspring always do! Great egg layers too! Mine also crossed with one of my Easter Eggers! Made this Gorgeous little white Rooster! Not very smart but man oh man! You should get some pretty cool little babies!

Awesome thanks!!!
I think we need to move, my backyard chicken flock is turning into a backyard chicken farm!!!
They changed our city ordinance where you're only allowed 4 hens now and no roosters.
I'm hoping my silkie roo stays quiet because he is my favorite!!!

They start trying around 4-6 months...Not sure when they are fertile though, but I assume around the same time...A bantam roo will have a hard time successfully mating a large hen, but it is in no way impossible...I mean think about dogs and sizes...there are chihuahua pit bull mixes, so it's possible, but takes a little more determination from the rooster. I have a silkie roo and a couple large fowl hens and I see him interested in and trying to mate with the large hens...the big roo won't let him.

I had a tiny rooster (half modern game, half bantam cochin) successfully mate with standard sized-hens.

We currently have a black mama bantam Dutch that hatched 9 (out of 12) babies and the dad is an all black standard Silkie and the chicks are sooo tiny and cute and all have Silkie qualities - feathery feet, five toes, tiny wings! none look like their mama :D other than some are all black - beak, eyes, comb, feet! the rest look like they have eyeliners! SOOOOO CUUUUTTTEEE!!!!!
