ANYONE, ever sold or auctioned old hens that aren't laying anymore? ?

lashwanb,
Here in Pa the auctions prices have been very high recently. The people that bid on them generally know they are spent hens. They were getting from $5 to over $15 each for the hens a few months ago. I haven't seen what the auctions have done this last month. These birds generally go to the NY and DC live markets. HS

hi there

myself i wouldnt care if they laid or not they would be pets, even though you say they are not if you work with them they can be but i digress... so yes there are people like myself that would buy them but people like me are very few and in between. just as long as she is honest someone like me might come around..you never know

We have a Barred Rock hen that looks old and is at least blind in one eye or maybe both. She is so sweet and laid back I could not do that. We will be keeping her until the end.

A few months ago around here, hens were bringing $5-$15 ... right now it's more like $2.00. EVERYBODY is culling. I was at our local livestock auction a couple of times recently. One night there were about 30 roosters, most went for $1.00 or so. Last night there were several crates of six hens, probably not laying. They went for $2.00-$2.75 each. I live in a rural northeastern PA.

The only thing bringing any money last night were fancy pigeons and guineas. Several young toulouse geese went for about $4.00 each. Location and time of year has a lot to do with pricing.

Holy cow poultrykeeper, is that the auction ive heard about in Seakonk (sorry about spelling)? at that price, it would cover my gas to drive down from Maine

lashawnb, There is a market inCollinsville, AL where they sell for that or more. She should be able to get anywhere from $5 to $8 each if she puts up a little sign saying Hens for Butchering/Non Laying and puts her price. I would suggest she put the $8 as most of the customers will want to dicker with her on the price

Are you refering to a market or a auction? If a auction then, hmmm...not sure

I guess here folks eat alot of the sales cause the prices are still high. Roos sold for 7 each and the hens went for 9 ( older spent hens).

Now that being said saw some white leghorn hens went for 3.50.

Seems the RIR do the best here.

Sigh and why need to tame one RIR for the top roo's positon of my flock.

I basically traded roos for a load of straw last night.

I think $5 sounds high -- I'm incredulous that people are buying older hens for $13 and $15!!! That's insane. Around here it's more like $2 (or less) and you're lucky if you get $3.50 or $4 and then the auction house still gets their commission.

Personally, I figured that I got more value from having them butchered for stewing hens to use in the crockpot.

Does anyone know what young roos will bring at auction? 3-4 month olds? Is it better to sell them individually or in groups?

Very sad.......

Sad that people lie or sad that she's going to sell
her chickens for the stewpot?

Pretty much both but mostly that the little chickens stop having value as pets after the egg production falls off ;(
