ANYONE, ever sold or auctioned old hens that aren't laying anymore? ?

Any birds i have sold i get contact info on the person i sell to so i can check up on them and let then new owners know that for any reason the birds dont work out i will gladly take them back. So far i have had one plymouth rock bantam rooster that i rehomed get eaten by a predator, all the rest are happy and healthy in their new homes. I may be bugging the new owners by checking on the chickens but at least i care about them enough to do so.

I cull older hens at the 2-3 year old mark and process them for myself. As in an earlier post, the birds who are culled while still laying occasionally bring a higher price per bird around here. I don't know about at auction, but in the locals they run anywhere from $5-$10 dollars each.

As I cull and use for my own consumption, I know the birds are treated well up to point of death. If I were selling them, though, I wouldn't track their demise. I tend to let worries like this go with wind. Sufficient to the day is the evil therein and its just not healthy to invent things about which to worry.

I think its great for the people who have the luxury of keeping chickens as pets, but most of us have chickens for more practical reasons. I'm not saying I won't keep a particular favorite chicken past the age of usefulness sometimes, I have done so in the past. I make it a point to not get too attached to animals that are commonly raised for food. Its just common sense and causes one much less stress at the time of separation.

I guess a good thing to ask is if these chickens of her's have pet personalities at all? If she hasn't interacted with them ever, they may just be not something anyone would want to keep. Not every chicken has personality!
